The U14 hurlers played St Colms in
the final of the championship in
Dunmanway. Making light of difficult
weather conditions the team took the game to their opponents from the
off and
were ahead after the first quarter. Colms came back into it for the
second
quarter with some fine long range free taking and the score was 3-3 to
1-6 in
favour of the Kilmacs at halftime. Raising their game after halt time
the
Kilmacs went on to dominate the second half even if they didn’t reflect
it on
the score board and were winners on the score 4-7 to 2-6. All the
players can
feel proud of their contributions to a fine team effort but especially
prominent were Niall Hayes, Liam Cahalane, Liam Thompson, Martin
Collins,
Richie O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan and Oisin O’Sullivan. The
outstanding
individual player, who was everywhere and superb in everything he did,
was
captain Eamon O’Sullivan who was presented with
the Fintan O’Callaghan Memorial cup by Fintan’s
parents. Team

Could the replay possibly match the
drawn game, for entertainment, excitement
and quality of football, was the question being asked last week about
the Under
21 B Football Final. Well it did and it was even better. The clerk of
the
weather played a part by providing an almost perfect evening for
football, in
the fine Rosscarbery venue. Both teams gave it their all again in the
same
positive sporting manner. While a few yellow cards were issued, they
were very
much of a technical nature. St James’s were thoroughly disappointed no
doubt by
the narrow defeat but they can take a lot of positives from their
campaign and
this fine bunch of players must have a bright future. Kilmacabea Club
wishes
them well. Both clubs have a lot in common at many levels.
For Kilmacs this was a very heart
warming victory. Almost half of last year’s
team had moved on. The new players joining the panel had never won
anything
under age, until they captured the 2007 Non Exam Minor League Title.
Most of
the panel had a taste of success last year for the first time and it
whetted
their appetites for more. They honed the traditional skills of the game
and
played for each other as a team. Daniel O Donovan, clearly much
improved after
his recent injury, had us two points up by the fourth minute. However
the
Ardfield men got a bit of a grip around the centre and were three
points clear
by the 20th minute. Were we going to be overrun this time?
The
selectors made a few positional switches up front involving Daniel,
John O
Driscoll and Coleman O Riordan which steadied the ship and four more
points to
two from James’s narrowed the gap to one at the break.
The
second half lived up to everything these two teams had produced so far.
The quality of the exchanges and the closeness of the scores had
everybody
on tenterhooks. Only twice was there more than the minimum between the
sides.
To the delight of Kilmacs and the dismay of Ardfield, one of those was
at the
final whistle, when the score was 0-12 to 0-10. Ruairi Hourihane did
Trojan
work around the centre of the field. His partner Kevin O Sullivan
should be
very happy also with his contribution. Clive Sweetnam’s work rate at
centre
back was very significant and he went forward for two great points from
play
which proved to be the difference in the end. Sam O Driscoll was solid
as ever
at full back. What he lacks in stature he makes up for in skill,
courage and
ability to read situations. Mark Jennings and Stephen Calnan completed
a very
effective last line of defence and gave great cover to Colin McCarthy
in goal;
he wasn’t tested as severely this time as he had been in the earlier
games. His
reading of the game and great kick outs were very important in a game
where
every ball counted. On the wing Thomas French was his usual lively
self, ever
ready to drive forward and link up with the attack and Jonathan Hill
policed
his opposite number very effectively for the hour. John O Driscoll at
centre
forward won some great ball especially in the second half. Richard Jennings, Timothy Nyhan, Coleman
O Riordan and Andrew O Callaghan hero of the drawn game all worked very
hard in
attack. Daniel O Donovan, who was held scoreless in the drawn game,
notched 10
points (6 from frees) matching the opposition’s total. What more needs
be said.
Connor O Callaghan came on as sub late in the game. Tom Collins,
Patrick O
Driscoll and Joseph O Callaghan all played their part during the
campaign. The
shrewd management of Mick O Donovan and his co- selectors Dan Hourihane
and
John Keohane meant it was in fact a twenty two man effort. All of them
can take
immense pride in this success.
Kieran O Sullivan was present for
the presentation of the magnificent trophy
commemorating his late parents as was Teresa Cadogan representing the
sponsors
Clona Milk. Captain Ruairi’s acceptance speech was the most emotional
this
writer has heard in over twenty years involved with the club. The
graciousness
of the St. James’s camp in defeat was exemplary and when Ruairi called
for
three cheers for them, he got a very genuine response. See below for
some images of the lads celebrating.

The
first competitive game was played on
the redeveloped full size pitch when the U-16 footballers took on
Gabriel Og in
their first game of the season on Sunday morning 9th March.
It was a
fine day for what turned out to be a very entertaining game. Due to
other
commitments it was a struggle to get a full party but the younger lads
who took
to the field certainly did not let the side down. Gabriels had already
a game
under their belt and it showed as they were much faster and combining
better.
This was reflected on the scoreboard with Gabriels going in at half
time
comfortably ahead on the score of 2-8 to 1-3. With Gabriels getting
another
goal on the restart it could easily have become
a white wash on the scoreboard. Instead with a few
positional
switches and a huge work rate from the men around the middle, Joseph
Collins,
John O’Sullivan, Sean O’Regan and Thomas Jennings the Kilmacs raised
their game
and by the 24th minute of the half had took the lead. From
here to
the whistle the game swung from end to end and even though victory went
to
Gabriels on the score of 6-10 to 5-8 there was a lot of pluses to be
taken from
the game especially the attitude and effort of all. Team –Niall Hayes,

It may have seemed
like
two
for the price of one, as Kilmacabea GAA celebrated their victories of
2006 and
2007 playing seasons, at their club Dinner Dance in the West Cork Hotel
on
Saturday night the 9th February but in fact all seven finals
were
played during the calender year 2007. It must have been unique
achievement for
the club to have successes in two seasons in a row in both football and
hurling.
Pride of place must go to the
small but enthusiastic panel of hurlers and their dedicated mentors,
led by
T.J. Collins, who are fostering the ancient game of the Gaels in what
would be
seen as traditional football country. The fact that they might have
campaigned
in C or D grade didn’t take in any way from the sense of achievement of
all
concerned. A few recruits from our neighbour’s territory across the
harbour
helped the cause. A little help from
your friends can be very valuable. One of those players has the
distinction of
winning Under 16 Championship medals in both football and hurling. The
football
was won with his home club Castlehaven. Medals were presented by club
Vice
President Fr. Pat O Sullivan MSC for the 2006 U.14 Hurling Championship
and the
2007 U.16 Hurling Championship, with most the player being involved in
both
victories.
Fr O Sullivan presented
plaques to the Minor Footballers who won County B 12 a side non exam
League.
They can be very proud of their achievement, it being only the third
time that
the club has ever captured a county title at any level. Next to receive
their
medals were the U.21 Footballers who clinched the B Championship in
2007,
having been narrowly defeated in the 2006 final virtually the same
group of
players. The shield which was awarded to them as Buckley Finance Team
of
the
Month of June was also on display to enhance the impressive array of
trophies
decorating the top table.

The final group to receive
their Celtic Crosses from Fr. Pat were the 2006 Junior 1 League
winners, again
a first for the club at this level. Sincere thanks to the 2007
Winners Bandon for
the
loan of the Michael
Godley Memorial Cup to honour the occasion. Also on display was the All
Ireland
Junior 7 a side Shield won a competition hosted by St Jude’s Club in Dublin.
Cill Mhic
Abaidh add their name to an impressive spread of clubs from Cork to
Donegal
The formalities were completed
with the presentation of new individual awards to be presented annually
to Club
Members of the Year. Diarmaid O Donovan presented the Timothy O Donovan
Memorial Cup in memory of his brother, to Sam O Driscoll as Young
Player of
2007. Sam just pipped one or two other under age players in the votes
of the
members. Timothy O Donovan who lost his life in 1993 at the early age
of
fifteen had won three Under 14 Football Championship medals, a rare
enough
distinction. The evergreen Timmy O
Mahony was awarded the Player of the Year Trophy for his outstanding
defensive
displays in 2007. Did he ever have a bad year since he first pulled on
the green
and gold jersey? Finally hardworking
club honorary secretary John O
Sullivan
was presented with a plaque Club Person of the Year. His work load was
doubled
if not trebled in 2007 with all the administration involved in fund
raising and
grounds development.
The two hundred
patrons
were
well looked after by the West Cork Hotel management and staff and were
entertained until the early hours of Sunday morning by John O Brien
musical
duo. Chairman Patrick Burke and M C John Keohane can be well pleased
with their
nights work.

The U 16 hurlers
took on
Ardfield in the
championship final on Sunday 21st October in Rosscarbery.
After
getting the ideal start with a goal and a point in the first minute the
early
exchanges were even. The team were playing well within themselves and
had a
physically advantage when they received a major set back when a player
was sent
off for a clumsy challenge after 10 minutes. As they were only a point
ahead at
this stage this looked like a major blow early in the game. The next 10
minutes
were even as both sides came to grips with the situation. In the last
10
minutes of the half the Kilmacs had managed to extend their lead to 3
points
when they were dealt what appeared to be further severe blows with the
concession of two goals coming up to half time and went in down on the
score
1-5 to 3 –2. With the concession of a further point at the start of the
second
half and with Padraig Burke making a great save it looked as if it
might not be
the Kilmacs day. They were now working very hard throughout the pitch
and got
to grips with the numbers disadvantage and were creating opportunities
but not
taking them. They got the break they needed when Colin McCarthy(1-1)
got a goal
in the 4th minute. This lifted the team and with the effort
of every
player they increased the tempo and eventually regained the lead mid
way thro
the half. From here to the end it was close but the Kilmacs were on top
possession wise but again were not reflecting it on the score board. It
was nip
and tuck to the end but in the last minute as in the first John
O’Sullivan(2-3)
split the defence to goal and to copper fasten a deserved victory. The
final
score was 3-10 to 3-6. As well as those already mentioned Joseph
Collins((0-5)
and Michael Dineen were the power house at midfield, Richard(0-1) and
Thomas
Jennings were very lively, Sean O’Regan, Eoghan O’Neill and Liam
Cahalane were
on top of their game in defence. Other panel members were Kevin Hayes,
Padraig
McCarthy, Liam Thompson, Tommy Hayes.

An award
ceremony for the U21 footballers, who were named June Carbery team of
the month,
was held in The Leap Inn on Friday 27th July. The award was
presented by Buckley Financial Services of Dunmanway. The Under 21
footballers
had a fantastic year winning the West Cork
‘B’ Championship. The team defeated
Ballinscarthy 1-12 to 2-04 in the first round, Barryroe 2-17 to1-05 in
the
quarter final, Muintir Bhaire 3-09 to 0-12 in the semi-final and
Caheragh 1-13
to 0-10 in the final to gain the title. This small panel of 19 players,
along
with mentors Dan Hourihane, John Keohane and Michael O’Donovan, have
been
together from underage. They have experienced great success along with
some disappointment
along the way. This championship and honour of June Carbery team of the
month
was a just reward for their efforts over the years.
Below
is a photo of the Under 21 panel, mentors
and Mr. Timmy Buckley of Buckley Financial Services, along with the

The minor
non-exam team
continued the
clubs good week when they took on Bishopstown in Ahiohill on Wednesday 27-6-07 in the final. Bishopstown started in a hurry and showing
great
skill looked a team of all talents and was completely on top from the
start one
of the turning points of the game came in the first minute. Bishopstown
were
awarded a harsh penalty but Joseph Collins produced a superb save to
keep the
sheet clean. Bishopstown continued to dominate possession for the next
10minutses but kicked some good scoring chances wide and the Kilmac's
were
doing well to be behind 0-1 to 0-2 after 11 minutes when a second
turning point
came. Again Bishopstown cut through the Kilmac defence but were denied
by
another outstanding save from Joseph Collins. From this the team seemed
to lift
themselves all round the field. The defenders were now on top of their
game and
the Kilmac's were winning possession. In possession they were moving
the ball
excellently and were now creating and scoring and playing superb
football
throughout the pitch. Ball was played accurately from defence to attack
and
converted to the extent that the Kilmac's were 0-7 to 0-3 ahead coming
up to
the halftime whistle when a third crucial moment came. After another attack Mark
Jennings strike for a point deceived the Bishopstown goal keeper and looped
into the
corner of the goal so that the Kilmac’s went in ahead on the score 1-7
to 0-3.
Coming out at the start of the second half they continued where they
left off
and extended their lead by 2 points. Bishopstown were always dangerous
and they
broke through for a goal after 5 minutes. The Kilmac's were still
winning
possession but now unlike the first half they were giving away
possession
easily and started to look nervous and were now amassing the wides.
Being able
to bring on a player of Kevin O’Sullivans ability after 15 minutes when
the gap
was down to 5 points was a big boost and the Kilmac’s were able to
weather the
pressure and went on to win on the score
of 1-11 to 1-4. This was a all round superb performance. Joseph’s saves
were
crucial in keeping the Kilmac’s in the game early on. Captain Sam
O’Drsicoll
produced his usual dynamic performance leading from the front and
winning ball
he had no right to and Stephen Calnan was rock solid beside him. Clive
Sweetnam
was a giant at center back driving the team forward scoring (1-1)and
got great
support from Jon Hill and Thomas Jennings who once they settled,
mastered their
dangerous opponents. Brendan McCarthy(0-1) was effective in getting
through a
huge amount of work at midfield. The attack with Colin McCarthy leading
the
scoring with 6 points from play and frees, Mark Jennings(0-1), Timothy
Nyhan
(0-2), Andrew O’Callaghan and Sean O’Regan were superb
as a unit with excellent passing and movement and
running off the
ball and created and scored some excellent points. John O’Sullivan was
an
effective sub and Padraig Burke, Richard Jennings, Joseph O’Callaghan
and
Colman O’Riordan were also part of the panel. This was a fine game of
football
played in the right spirit throughout by both teams and was a pleasure
to
watch. Bishopstown had very skilful and dangerous players but the saves
by
Joseph and the all round effectiveness of the defensive work must have
been
soul destroying.
This
group of Kilmacabea players have worked as
hard as any team with
little success over the years but they have never faltered and it is a
credit
to their own determination as well as their ability that they have
succeeded.
Well done to what the mentors Sean Tobin and Michael Gore with help
from Johnny
O’Sullivan have achieved with this group.

After an
excellent game
in Kealkill
Kilmacabea lifted the cup amid scenes of great joy after overcoming the
loss of
key players prior to the game. This game was won due to good football,
hard
work and right attitude by every player on the pitch
Victory was the
just
reward for the U 21’s
when they played Caheragh in the final of the championship on Sunday 24th
June in Kealkil. Going into the game without the services of two
players it was
felt that they would have a difficult test but as happens adversity is
the true
test of the man. This group of players have been together from underage
and
have experienced some down days along the way but they put all this
behind them
on Sunday to fashion a deserved victory. In the first half the Kilmac's
were
playing into the wind and when Caheragh started well and went two
points up it
looked as if it may be Caheragh’s day. The Kilmac's were not having any
of it
and with Daniel O’Donovan putting over 2 fine 45’s the game was evenly
balanced
at 0-4 each after 10 minutes. The Kilmac's had a let off in the 12th
minute when Caheragh had a goal disallowed and soon after Timothy
O’Donovan
made a great save to prevent a certain goal, The sides were tied at 6
points
each after 21minutes when the vital score came Kilmac's way. After
typical Sam
O’Driscoll defending, Ruairi Hourihane split open Caheragh with a
powerful run
before parting to Ger O’Donovan who goaled with his usual style. This
allowed
the Kilmac's to go in a goal ahead at half time. Getting a quick point
on the
restart allowed them to absorb some Caheragh pressure but with the
everyone
working very hard for the cause the Kilmac's were able to lift their
game and
were in control and went on to win on the score 1-13 to 0-10. This was
a game with
some fine football and was played in good spirit on the whole. This was
a
superb team performance. The leading lights produced their expected
goods but
it was the performance of the others that won the game. Timothy
O’Donovan was
dependable in goal and his kick outs good. The full back line of Barry
Ronan,
Niall McCarthy and Sam O’Driscoll were heroic. Time after time winning
ball and
clearing their lines. The half back line of Clive Sweetnam,
Michéal O’Donovan
and Thomas French had a battle royal but came out on top. Ruairi
Hourihane and
James Calnan gave the Kilmac's the advantage around the middle. Daniel
O’Donovan showed his undoubted ability winning important ball when
needed and
linking with the attack and scoring some fine scores. Ger O’Donovan was
his
usual class in everything he did also getting some fine scores. John
O’Driscoll
won a lot of ball and was dangerous. Brian O’Sullivan, Timothy Nyhan,
and Mark
Jennings worked very hard and linked well as an attack. Andrew
O’Callaghan and
Brian O’Donovan also did their bit. For the small panel of 19 players
this was
a great reward for their effort and skill and was richly deserved. Well
done to
mentors, Dan Hourihane, John Keohane and Michael O’Donovan.

The
U10 hurlers played their first game of the season when they
played Pedlars Cross in Leap on Saturday 9th June. For some
this was
also their first proper game so it was a huge learning experience. This
was
obvious early on as it took them a while to get their bearings. This
was a good
introduction against a stronger and skilful Pedlars team. As the game
progressed they showed great enthusiasm and were improving as they
settled.
Given the age of the group they showed plenty to work with. Importantly
they
all got the opportunity to play in ideal conditions.

After a
long
lay off the U-14 hurlers (pictured above)
played the final of the 2006 championship when they took on Timoleague
in
Ardfield on Sunday 18th February. Being physically stronger
than
their opponents Kilmacabea quickly began to control the game. With
captain
Joseph Collins dominating around the middle of the field Kilmacabea and
with
John O’Sullivan winning possession at will the scores followed quickly.
While
these two showed their undoubted hurling ability it was also a day
where all
players on the pitch demonstrated the development of their hurling
skills.
Padraig Burke was capable of dealing with what came his way in goal.
Eoin
O’Neill and Darren O’Callaghan were completely on top in the full back
line and
were impenetrable. Sean O’Regan and Niall Hayes won a huge amount of
possession
around the half-back line and used it to good effect going forward.
Eamon
O’Sullivan picked up a lot of possession around the middle and linked
well with
those around him. The forwards Thomas Jennings, Kevin Hayes, Liam
Cahalane
combined well to create and take scores. Padraig McCarthy,
Finnán Tobin, Shane
Newman, Tommy Hayes all came on to play their part in what resulted in
a
welcome victory for this team. Denny Hayes, Liam Thompson and Ryan
O'Neill were
also part of the group. Credit to
Timoleague whose young team kept playing right to the end. The cup was
presented to Joseph Collins by Barbara O’Callaghan who together with
her
husband Liam have presented the cup to Carbery Bord na nOg to

memory of their son Fintan’s love of hurling. Well done to all involved
especially T.J. Collins for the work he put into this team.

History of the
right sort
was made in
Ardfield on Sunday 4th February 2007 when Kilmacabea won
their first
title at Junior “A” level, after almost 120years playing, when they
defeated
Oliver Plunkett’s in the final of the 2006 league. The day was perfect
for
football, with the day dry, mild and not a puff of wind. The pitch was
in
perfect condition after the recent huge developments and everything was
set up
for football to be played.

Donnie O'Donovan and Tom Sheahan
in
action during the league final.
After the early
exchanges
the Kilmacs got
the perfect
settler when Daniel O’Donovan converted a penalty for a goal for the
first
score of the day. Plunketts responded with some points of their own but
with
the Kilmacs moving fluently from defence to attack the advantage was
being
maintained. The switch of Daniel O Donovan and James Calnan after 10
minutes
was to benefit both players. Some fine points were scored following
good
combination play and good attacking use of the ball. When Donie
O’Donovan
scored a fine goal following good work by his brother Eoin and Ger
O’Donovan in the 26th minute the
Kilmacs
were dominant and went in ahead 2-6 to 0-4 after playing well. Coming
out for
the second half and playing with the wind the Kilmacs could feel
comfortable.
As would be expected the Plunketts had other ideas. Rearranging things
around
the centre they proceed to take control of the game for the third
quarter
picking up a lot of loose ball. It was
now the turn of the Kilmacs defence to play their part and this they
did excellently.
They stuck with their men and kept the pressure on the opposing
forwards. With
the experience of Brendan O’Driscoll and Timmie O’Mahony leading the
way and
the younger players following their lead, the defence was keeping a
tight rein
and Ol. Plunketts, while working hard, were not getting the
breakthrough they
needed. Having been under pressure in the third quarter the Kilmacs
raised
their game and with the introduction of Barry Glavin the moves started
to flow
and some fine points were scored to complete what was an important win
for this
group and the club. The final score was Kilmacabea 2 –13 Oliver
Plunketts 0 –
10. Sean De Barra, Runai, Carbery Board presented the cup to the
captain Eoin
O’Donovan. It was a day when there were so many good things to praise,
such as
the presence and tightness of the defence, the football and work rate
of the
midfield, the linking and attacking of the half forwards and the ball
winning
capability and scoring of the full forward line. A day for the football
ability
and combined play of the team to show and even more importantly, the
commitment
of all the players in supporting each other both in defence and attack.
On a
day when all players contributed handsomely one man must be mentioned,
Donie
O’Donovan gave an outstanding display of his football ability using the
ball to
effect and took some fine scores. Playing his second game of the day he
should
be urged to do this every time if he can repeat this level of
performance. Well
done to all and to the mentors and backroom team John Burke (Manager),
Dan Hourihane,
Kevin O’Driscoll, Stephen Calnan (trainer) and physio Frances
Shanahan. Team -Timothy O’Donovan, Ciaran O’Donovan, Niall McCarthy,

Subs used Barry Glavin, Adrian O’Driscoll, Noel McCarthy, Noel Crowley.

of the Junior A team on a memorable
day for Kilmacabea GAA.
Hard luck to Oliver
Plunketts who
contributed to a clean and sporting game
and kept playing football to the end. They have some talented players
of their
own with young Kevin Coffey a joy to watch when motoring.
Thanks to the
referee
Séamus O’Driscoll,
Ilen Rovers who also played his part in the sporting manner of the

16/12/2006:
On Saturday
16/12/06 the U-21
footballers played St. Mary’s in the final
of the championship in Unionhall. On a dry day with no wind and with a
good
pitch it was an ideal day for what turned out to be a good game of
football.
Kilmacabea started the brighter and made the early running and got the
early
scores. When St. Mary’s settled they had their period of dominance and
were on
top up to half time. Timothy O’Donovan was playing excellently in goal
and had
made a number of good stops. Kilmacabea were the happier of the two
teams going
in behind on the score of 0-5 to 0-6. Having to rearrange the team due
to an
injury at the start of the second half in fact gave Kilmacabea a better
hold on
the game. Having conceded a couple of early scores they got the boost
they
needed when they scored a fine goal after six minutes and the Kilmacs
went on
to dominate possession for the next twenty minutes. Unfortunately St.
Mary’s
were always able to respond with a score when needed. Each time the gap
was
closed St Mary’s got a score and with the Kilmacs attacking they broke
for the
clinching goal in the final minute. The final score was St. Mary’s 1 -
13
Kilmacabea 1-9. When the Kilmacs reflect
on this game they can feel satisfied that each and every player gave
his all
and played well in a good game of football. The winning of the game was
there
for them when they had a number of wides midway thro the second half
when they
were on top. Best on the day were Timothy O’Donovan, Ruairi Hourihane,
Daniel
O’Donovan and Donacha McCarthy. Team Timothy O’Donovan, Clive Sweetnam,

08 Dec 2006
On
the night of Friday 8th December, months of hard work by a
dedicated
committee and a committed group of sellers came to a conclusion when
the
Kilmacabea GAA Club fundraising draw was held in the parish hall in
Leap.
Capable Master of ceremonies on the night was John Keohane, who
welcomed the
crowd and introduced the guest of honour, “the voice of sport in West
Cork”,
Mr. Paudie Palmer of County Sound fame. He
continued by giving a brief outline of events that led to the situation
and the
input of the people involved. Pat Burke, chairman of the club, spoke of
the
realisation of a dream for the club, which was due to the hard work of
the
sellers and to the people all over and especially of West
Cork
in their generosity in supporting the draw.
Support came from a wide area from people in all areas from Mizen ,
Michigan,
London, Paris, and all areas in between, from the greater Cork County
and
especially enormous support from all areas of the Carbery division,
with a
special mention for the reception from Castletownbere.

Fig1: Everybody waiting eagerly with their tickets before the Draw is
made..
Paudie Palmer gave his
eloquent and humorous view on the proceedings speaking about “civic and
social
pride” and set the players of the club a big challenge in that the last
draw he
did was for Ballingeary 12 months ago and what they have gone on to
achieve.
John Keohane went on to thank the sellers for their time, energy and
endeavour
and the club owes them a huge debt of gratitude. Paudie Palmer drew the
first
ticket and the winner of the car were William and Katherine Carley,
Mullinagore, Castle Bridge, Co. Wexford. Some bewilderment was felt
when this
was called out that the prize had gone so far away after all the
tickets that
had been sold but this was tempered when it was realised that this was
Katherine (Keohane) of Kilfinnan who is the sister of Angela O’Donovan
who had
amazed everyone in the amount of tickets, herself and her husband Donal
had
sold.

Fig2: Paudie Palmer keeping everyone entertained, including (L to R)
John Keohane, John O' Sullivan,
Pat Burke, Pat O' Callaghan and Tom Ryan.
The second prize of €5,000 was drawn by Clare O’Donoghue and was won by
Mr. Dan Crowley, Cashelmore, Enniskeane, and the ticket was sold by
Michael
Crowley and James Nyhan. Third prize of €2,000
was drawn by Daniel O’Donovan and was won by Mr
John O’Driscoll
of Drishanebeg, Skibbereen and the ticket was sold by Ger O’Donovan and
Mary O
Brien. Fourth prize of €1,000 was drawn
by Joseph Collins and was won by Finbarr O’Neill c/o the Red Fort,
Ballineen
and was sold by John Burke. Fifth prize an All- Ireland football
weekend, was
won by Declan Barrett, 16, Innishmore
Park,
Cobh
and was sold by John O’Donovan. Sixth prize, an
All Ireland hurling weekend went to Sheila Fitzgerald, Willow
Park,
Clonakilty and was sold by T.J. Collins and
Mick O’Donovan. Thanks go to Garda Sean Dwyer who oversaw that
proceedings were
in order throughout the draw. The gross ticket sales raised
approximately €250k
which is a tribute to the sellers and to the people who supported it. As well as the success of the draw in the
amount of money it raised, a greater achievement was the sense of unity
from
everyone within the parish in working to achieve their aim to improve
things
for the community and the response from the public. Prior to the draw
there was
a superb meal provided by Brian and Anne Sheehan of the Leap Inn for
all the
sellers which was appreciated by all. After the draw was over everyone
returned
to the Leap Inn to celebrate their effort and to enjoy their
achievement.
Prizes for the sellers went to Kay Ronan and Breda O’Donovan, Ger.
O’Donovan
and Mary O’Brien and Angela and Donal O’Donovan.

20/10/2006:
History was
made on Friday evening 20th
October when the club fielded a third adult side in the championship in
one
year for the first time when Kilmacabea took on the home side in
Aughaville
under lights. Unfortunately some players didn’t turn up and it was a
pity as
the team had to start with only fourteen players, which put them on the
back
foot. This was a disadvantage but there was enough shown during the
game to
suggest that a better result could have been achieved with a full
complement of
players. Even though it takes a bit of gathering the players are there
and it
was a worthwhile exercise and it is important to give as many players
as
possible a game and keep them involved. Some of the players involved
hadn't
played much football for a while but it was good to see them take part
and
their effort was appreciated. Credit to those who turned up and played.

27/08/2006:
Disappointment
was
the result for
the junior “A” footballers in the semi final of the championship vs.
St.
Columns at Ahiohill on Sunday 27th August. The team started
well and
playing with the strong wind appeared to be playing well within
themselves and
were ahead after the first quarter. St. Columns made some crucial
switches at
this stage which nullified the influence of the Kilmacs half back line
and with
Alan O’Connor showing his undoubted ability the Kilmacs faded from the
game for
the second quarter. In saying that the full back line were playing well
and
were limiting their opponents. It was going to be a big ask to win the
game
turning around to face the wind when the sides went in level at half
time on
the score 0-5 each. Starting with the first score of the second half it
was
hoped they might be able to do it. They kept working hard and the game
was
tight and competitive but they had to work very hard for their scores.
A
crucial moment came in the 14th minute when a last desperate
goal
line clearance was made by Columns, who were two points ahead and they
then
went down the other end and added another point. Kilmacs kept working
hard but
were chasing the game. They did respond with a point but again Colums
got a
score to cancel it. The Kilmacs kept trying and another crucial moment
was in
the 28th minute, with Kilmacs 2 points down, the St. Columns
goalkeeper made an outstanding save from Shane O’Brien. Colums were
able to use
this boost to push on for two more points and they were victorious on
the score
of 0-13 to 0-9. On the day St. Colums were the better team. The Kilmacs
worked
very hard and on the day did not play to their potential. In saying all
that
this was still a game they could have won and the vital scores did not
come
when needed. When they reflect on it some of the opposition scores came
from
Kilmac mistakes and in the first half the defenders would feel harshly
penalised for a few frees that counted against them. Well done to all
involved
for the time and effort and they showed in the way they battled that
their
heart is right. They showed that they are capable and on another day it
could
have gone their way and they can hold their heads up.

17/08/2006:
On Thursday 17th
August the minor footballers played St. Columns in the first round of
the
championship in Aughaville. The team took a while to settle but
improved during
the 2nd quarter. On balance they were happy to go in level
at half
time on the score of 0-4 each as St. Columns had missed a number of
scoring
opportunities. At the start of the second half the Kilmacs upped the
game and a
purple patch proved decisive and yielded 1-2 to give them control. St.
Columns
battled hard to regain the game but the Kilmacs responded with a good
work rate
all round the pitch. St. Columns closed the gap to two points but the
Kilmacs
responded and re-established a four point gap. The final score was
Kilmacabea
1-9 St. Columns 0-8. All players had their moments and displayed a good
work
rate especially in the second half when the need was greatest. The
early part
of the game showed their lack of match practice. Team Niall Twomey, Sam
O’Driscoll,
Stephen Calnan, Jonathon Hill, Clive Sweetnam, Kevin O’Sullivan, Thomas

travelled to Rosscarbery
on Saturday morning 12th August to play the locals. With
Martin
Collins and Diarmuid O’Callaghan dominating midfield, Shane O’Neill
controlling
the defence and Shane McDermott leading the attack the team were well
in
control all through. Showing a little more all round hurling and
strength than
their opponents it gave all the players a chance to play through the
game and
they won convincingly.

that the Kilmacabea Under 14 team took part in on the weekend of the
16/06/2006.The Feile hurling competition is part of an All
Ireland
competition with competitions at various gradings to suit the level of
ability, the weekend turned out to be a most enjoyable if extremely
busy weekend. As the
club
were hosts to a team representing London,
who were welcomed on the Thursday evening of the 14/06/2006. Various
families within
the parish provided accommodation. On Friday, the 15/06/2006, afternoon
Kilmacabea
played London in Leap and
getting a few early scores were able to do enough to win the game. From
here
both groups travelled to Cork for a parade through the streets addressed by the
president of the
GAA, Nicky Brennan and including 175 teams from all over Ireland
and England. On Saturday, the 16/06/2006, the games were played in
Skibbereen.
Kilmacabea first
played Dr. Crokes from Kerry and went in at half time down 3 points
against a
good balanced hurling side. In the second half the Kilmacs put in a
superb
performance to turn it around to win by two points. Unfortunately they
had to
play a very strong Skibbereen side immediately afterwards. This was a
tight
battle with the game swinging from one team to the other. The game was
eventually decided by Skibbereen's strength in being able to get goals
when
needed and the result was 2-6 to 4-4 in favour of Skibbereen. Even
though the
end was disappointing this was a superb experience for this group and
for the
club. It is unlikely that the opportunity to play in the competition
will arise
again. The hosting of the London
club was also most enjoyable. The lads that came over were a credit
to themselves, their families and their clubs in their manner, the way
they
fitted in and the way they played the game and they would be welcome
anywhere
any time. The club would also like to thank the families who hosted
people and
even though it was a busy schedule it was a good experience. Well done
to all
involved.

The Kilmacabea U-12 team lost
the west Cork final against Pedlars Cross in Rosscarbery. Unfortunately
the game was played in poor weather conditions. The team gave their all
and many played well, but lacked penetration. Congratulations to
Pedlars Cross. The Kilmacabea team is pictured

Kilmacabea GAA Club held
a very successful
function in the Leap Inn where a
press night
was held to announce details of the proposed developments to the
William
Goulding Park and to launch the fundraising scheme to fund these
developments.
This will take the form of a draw which will take place on December 8th
2006. The meeting was very well attended (pictured below) with
political representatives
Mr Jim
O’Keefe T.D., Senator Michael McCarthy and Councillors Joe Carroll, Jim
Daly,
Tadhg O’Donovan, Donal O’Rourke and Christy O’Sullivan. The chairman
Mick Dolan
and development officer Declan Walsh represented Cork County Board.
Chairman
Frank Long and Treasurer James O’Neill represented the West Cork Board.
The
under age board was represented by Chairman Billy Creedon and
development
officer Denis Keohane.
The top prize for the draw:
The Junior “A”
team won the first round of the championship
on Sunday 16th April in Rath against Muintir Bhaire. The Junior "A" team may have been lucky
in the end, but a good first-half performance bodes well for future
rounds of championship. The team is pictured below along with some
