          Weekly Notes 26 August 2010

The U14’s completed the double when they took on Kilmeen in the final of the Carbery “B” football championship. This was played in Rosscarbery on the 3rd August on a fine evening for football. With the preparation disrupted with holidays it took a while to settle. This game was extremely competitive. Kilmeen's intentions were clear from the start , robust defending,  withdrawing a forward as an extra defender and attacking on the break. In the early minutes it was Kilmeen who had the slight edge on the scoreboard 2 points to one. Following good combined play Jonathan O’Regan was at the end of a move to billow the Kilmeen net. The Kilmacs had the advantage of the possession but Kilmeen harried and harassed and were dangerous on the counter attack. With injuries to key players the Kilmacs were finding it hard to press the advantage.  Exchanges continued in a similar fashion with the Kilmac's edging slightly in front. Kilmeen got a huge boost when they scored a goal just on half time to leave the score Kilmacabea 1-4 Kilmeen 1-3 and the game there for the taking. The first five minutes of the second half continued in a similar manner but the Kilmacs were now completely on top in defence and the pressure on the Kilmeen defence was unceasing. Slowly the Kilmacs were finding the range and edging clear and their was only likely to be one winner. Holding Kilmeen scoreless for 25minutes meant the Kilmacs were in a good position when Kilmeen did get their only point of the second half . The Kilmacs responded to that to close the game with further points and win on the score Kilmacabea 1-13 Kilmeen 1-4. This was a whole team performance with every player playing his part on a day when people had to stand up and be counted. Credit for keeping playing the game and not losing discipline. Captain Shane McDermott was presented with the cup by John O’Driscoll vice chairman of Carbery Bord na nOg. Goalie Matthew O’Neill who came back from his holidays especially for the game was very solid throughout especially in the second quarter when he had to make some important saves. In front of him Odhran Connolly was very strong and he got good cover from his young corner backs Darren Whooley and Tiernan Kerrisk.    Shane O’Neill had a superb game at centerback and along with Daniel O’Sullivan and Aidan Williamson this was the strongest line of the team. In the second half they were completely dominant driving the team forward. Martin Collins(0-1) fielding was outstanding and his work rate was overpowering. Euan Tobin(0-1) also got through a lot of work linking effectively from defence to attack. Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-3)was injured early in the game, but as usual made a serious impact on proceedings. Captain Shane McDermott was an effective forward with good fielding and ability. Young Damian Gore was excellent, winning everything that came his way, against the odds and linking up well with the attack. Kevin Whooley(0-8) showed all his class really coming into form in the second half with some superb points. Young Ciarán French won important ball to make his mark. Jonathan O’Regan(1-0) worked hard and showed his ability in the manner he dispatched the goal. Sean French came on and made an immediate impact. Others to play their part were Issac O’Shea, Patrick O’Donovan, Eoin O’Sullivan and Ruairi O’Mahony. Well done to mentors William Williamson. Kevin O’Driscoll and Tom Sheehan. The huge support of the parish was also welcome and important.
Their was further success for Martin Collins when he played midfield for the Carbery U14 hurlers who beat Blarney in the replay of the County premier hurling championship final on Saturday 7th August.
The Cúl camp was held 3rd –6th August and was a huge success with over eighty boys and girls enjoying the activities in ideal weather. Thanks to the coaches and their assistants, guests Paudie Kissane and Paddy Kelly and the ladies committee, as well as the excellent organisation by John O’Sullivan.
Thanks to all who helped out and contributed to the underage clubs flag day in Skibbereen on Friday 6th August. The adult club are holding a dance with Patrick O’Sullivan on Friday 20th August in the West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen. Support appreciated.

The following were the prize winners in the August club draw; first Adrian O Driscoll, Derryleigh; second Jimmy Kenneally, Drinagh; third Breda O Donovan, Droum Hs. Consolation prizes went to Ken Anderson, Rowry; John Patk. Sheahan, Leap; Mark and Marie Limrick, Shreelane and Peter O Callaghan, Dungannon.

The U14’s who have been involved in hurling recently had to make the quick change over to football. They were straight in to championship action on Wednesday 21st July when they played Clanna na Gael in Rath. Showing no ill effects of the break they were soon back in to the flow of the game. Being well on top they were able to progress to the semi-final. This took place on Monday 26th July when they took on Skibbereen in Castlehaven. Starting positively and completely on top in all sectors the Kilmacs were totally dominant. Skibbereen tried hard but there was a huge gap in standard and there was only going to be one winner.  Team Ruairi O’Mahony, Darren Whooley, Odhran Connolly, Tiernan Kerrisk, Daniel O’Sullivan, Shane O’Neill Aidan Williamson, Euan Tobin, Martin Collins, Damian Gore, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Shane McDermott, Eoin O’Sullivan, Kevin Whooley, Jonathon O’Regan, Issac O’Shea, Ciarán French, Sean French, Patrick O’Donovan.

Kilmacabea and Kilbrittain served up an entertaining game when they met in the fourth round of the SW Junior A Football championship. It was played in Clonakilty’s wonderful venue, in perfect conditions, last Monday evening. Level at three points each with a quarter gone Kilbrittain cut through for a goal. Within three minutes Kilmac wing back Sam O Driscoll finished a great move, which he had started himself, to the back of the net. This boosted the western men and they landed five points before Kilbrittain replied with two to leave the score I – 8 to 1 – 5 at half time. After the resumption a pointed “forty five” for Kilbrittain was answered by three points from play, before Kilmacs struck for two goals by John O Driscoll and Ger O Donovan. Entering the last quarter with the margin eleven points the outcome appeared inevitable. However Kilbrittain never gave up, but the best they could do was whittle the lead down to eight points at the final whistle. Final score Kilmacabea 3 – 14, Kilbrittain 1- 12. Kilbrittain have the consolation of returning to their first love, hurling. Kilmacabea wish them well in their quest for further honours in that sport. Well done to all involved in Kilmacabea’s win and congratulations to full back Brendan O Driscoll and his wife Pauline on the recent birth of their baby son.

The minor footballers resumed their league campaign after the exam break when they played Muintir Bhaire in the league in Leap on Wednesday 30th June. On a wet evening it was the visitors who were the fastest off the mark, making the early running and getting the scores. As the Kilmacs found their feet and settled into the game they gradually cut the lead and were reasonably satisfied, behind at half time on the score 0-6 to 1-5. As the game progressed the Kilmacs had a slight advantage to eventually win out on the score 2-11 to 1-7. The weekend of 1st to 5th July was an important one for the club, when the U14 footballers represented the Parish and the County at the Féile football competition in Derry. While this was a huge undertaking for the club, involving a lot of travelling, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and immensely positive experience which was worth all the effort involved. The group travelled up on Thursday and were given a huge welcome by their host club, Creggan Kickhams, in their excellent facilities on the shores of Lough Neagh. The players stayed with host families and the welcome and hospitality shown them throughout the weekend was outstanding. On Friday they played the host club and then took part in a parade of participating teams (96 boys’ and 64 girls’) through Derry, which was a great experience. On Saturday there were four more group games. While the team did not qualify they performed fantastically and their game against the division winners was their toughest game of the competition. Congratulations to Diarmaid O’Callaghan who performed excellently in the skills competition. On Sunday the players rejoined their families and returned home on Monday.  It was a superb occasion thoroughly enjoyed by all. There are a huge number of people to be thanked for this occasion, including the sponsors of the fundraising draw, Drinagh Co Op, Skibbereen Credit Union for their generous sponsorship, the organisers led by Renie Burke, Brenda Whooley, Johnny O’Sullivan and all the people who supported the draw. The mentors Kevin O’Driscoll, William Williamson and Michael Gore had a very busy weekend. A huge word of thanks to Billie Thompson of Clóna Coaches who had a very demanding weekend with all the travelling involved. Thanks to the parents for their co-operation and support in these economically difficult times, as each player is a valued member of this small group especially on an occasion such as this. Congratulations to the Derry Féile committee and clubs for a competition that was hugely successful. On behalf of Kilmacabea GAA club a sincere thanks to Creggan Kichams for their welcome and hospitality and they are welcome to visit this part of the world hopefully in the near future.

        Weekly Notes 26 June 2010

On Wednesday 16th June the U14 hurlers played Skibbereen in the Championship in Unionhall. While the team had the advantage over their opponents they were made to work hard and were given a good test. With Martin Collins leading the way they had enough for victory. The U14 footballers were in action on Thursday 17th June when they played Clanna Gael in the league in Drimoleague. After a contest where they were made to work hard they were victorious. On Monday 21st June they were back in action when they took on Barryroe in the semi-final of the hurling championship in Ardfield. In the early exchanges it was the Barryroe men who had the advantage and the early scores. When the Kilmacs settled they had more of the play but were finding it hard to convert their scores. While they goaled with five minutes to half time Barryroe responded with a goal almost immediately and it was all to play for with the score at half time Kilmacabea1-7 Barryroe1-4. Playing with the fall and getting a goal and a point in the early minutes of the second half effectively decided the game and the Kilmacs were able to use their greater strength to drive on and control the game. The final score was Kilmacabea 3-15, Barryroe1-7. Team Ruairi O’Mahony, Odhran Connolly, Darren Whooley, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Shane O’Neill, Martin Collins1-4, Euan Tobin 0-2, Shane McDermott 1-0, Matthew O’Neill, Kevin Whooley 1-8, Eoin O’Sullivan 0-1, Ciarán French, DJ Glanton, Tiernan Kerrisk, Daniel O’Sullivan.

Castlehaven were the visitors to Leap for a U14 football league game on Thursday 10th June. The visitors started with intent and looked capable when they got an early goal. After this jolt the Kilmacs settled into their rhythm and proceeded to take control of the game on the field and on the scoreboard. With some fine displays in key positions and a good contribution from all the players the game was effectively decided by half time. They continued with some fine points in the second half and despite the needless concession of some goals towards the end it was another welcome win. The U14 footballers are travelling to the All Ireland Feile in Derry on the weekend 2-4th July. A fundraising draw is taking place on the 25th June and support is welcome for this historic occasion representing the parish.
The U10s had a long trip to play Naomh Abán in Ballyvourney on Saturday morning. Despite the long journey it was an enjoyable experience for all involved and thanks to the parents who gave of their time to travel and support. The U12 hurlers played their first league game on Monday 14th June against St. Colums in Leap. In the early exchanges it looked as if it was going to be a tough introduction and they were ten points down with little more than five minutes gone. With all the players starting to find their feet and with some inspirational play from some key players they worked their way back into the game and by half time were only two points down on the score 1-5 to 3-1. There was little between the sides in the third quarter  but with  a couple of goals coming with ten minutes to go, it was enough to give the Kilmacs the result which was earned by the effort of all the players Team: Oran Kerrisk, Tiernan Kerrisk 0-1, Christy Wilson, Dara Tobin, Ellis Wilson 1-1, Ian Jennings, Darren Whooley 2-8, Ross Cantwell, Jamie O’Donoghue, Ciarán French 0-1, Jamie Ronan, Myles Tobin 1-0, Karl Ronan, Colin Twomey, Chantelle French, Shannon Ronan, Conor Rush, Oisin Brown, Stephen O’Donovan, Gareth Whooley.

          Weekly Notes 12 June 2010

A somewhat depleted Kilmacabea second junior team travelled to Drimoleague Saturday evening last to take on their Clan Na nGael counterparts in the football league. After some confusion about the starting time Kilmacs found themselves playing second fiddle to a highly committed home side. The final score of 3 - 16 to 1 - 7 was an accurate reflection of Clan's superiority. However Kilmacs could not be faulted for lack of effort.
The sympathy of the club goes to Jonathan Hill, Clonkeen House on the death of his grandmother Mrs Connolly, Drinagh RIP, also to the O Leary family Drominidy on the death of Humphrey O Leary. Humphrey played football with St. Patrick's a club based in Leap which included a number of players like Humphrey from outside Kilmacabea parish. He had the distinction of captaining the team in 1950 when they reached the divisional final where they were defeated by Bandon. Humphrey recalled playing centre field on the occasion and scoring what he claimed was a perfectly good goal only to have it disallowed. He claimed this had a major bearing on the outcome of the game. Soon afterwards he took up road bowling, a sport he went on to compete in at the highest level. Suaimhneas siorai do.
The first prize winner in our monthly draw was Pat O Riordan, Gortnadihy. Hanley Calibrations, Little Island were the second prize winners and third went to Declan Hayes, Glandore. Consolation prize winners were Fachtna O Callaghan, Dungannon; Catriona Donovan, Ballyroe; DJ O Donovan, Riverview Gym, Bandon and Cait, Hannah and Mary Rose Shanahan, Clounties. Don’t forget our great night of comedy and music in the Leap Inn this Sunday 6th June with Don Parker.
On Friday 4th June the U14 footballers played a below strength Carbery Rangers in Rosscarbery in the league. Continuing their recent good form and playing excellent football they were victorious.
The U 10’s were in action on Saturday morning when Naomh Abán were the visitors. It was a good opportunity for all to develop their skills in an enjoyable morning. Among those involved Cillian Sheehan, Stephen O’Donovan, Adrian Gore, Euan Whelton, Christy Wilson, Dara Tobin, Jamie Ronan, Ian Jennings, Sean Burke, Odran Kerrisk, Ciarán Hernon, David Whelton, Cian Giles, Peter Collins, Eoghan O’Donovan, Billie Murphy, Ben Christie, Oisin Browne, Chantelle French, Aoife McNamara, Ciarán Burke, Ciara Whooley, Katelynn French, Mikey O’Mahony, Kyle Mulholland, Keith Whelton.

          Weekly Notes 29 May 2010

On Sunday last Kilmacabea's junior footballers travelled to Kinsale to play the local junior team in practice match. In the beautiful weather conditions which prevailed on the day it turned out to be a rather one sided contest. Kilmacs were easy winners on a score of 2 - 13 to 1 - 4. Anybody who wants tickets for the Cork/Kerry championship match should contact club treasurer Pat O Callaghan without delay
The past week was a quiet week competitively for most of the underage teams but Saturday 22nd May was a very important day for the next generation of footballers. This was a big day for the majority of the group getting the opportunity to wear the club colours in a wide U10 group blitz game. Playing a stronger Kilmichael group in Kilmichael might not have meant they could celebrate with a win but with everyone getting the opportunity to play, it was a most enjoyable game. On a beautiful day it should give great memories to all in the future and hopefully their enthusiasm and skill will flourish as well. Among those who took part, Cillian Sheehan, Stephen O’Donovan, Adrian Gore, Euan Whelton, Christy Wilson, Dara Tobin, Jamie Ronan, Ian Jennings, Sean Burke, Odran Kerrisk, Ciarán Hernon, David Whelton, Cian Giles, Peter Collins, Eoghan O’Donovan, Billie Murphy, Ben Christie, Oisin Browne, Chantelle French, Aoife McNamara, Ciarán Burke, Ciara Whooley, Katelynn French, Mikey O’Mahony.

          Weekly Notes 22 May 2010

Last weekend was a busy one for Kilmacabea. On Friday evening the second junior football squad travelled to Clonakilty to play Clon’s third string in their section of the league. A good first half performance helped by a strong breeze saw Kilmacs leading on a score of 1 – 7 to 1 – 5 at the break, John O Sullivan contributing 1 – 4. However with the wind in the second half the home side dominated and ran out easy winners. Final score Clon 2 – 11, Kilmacs 1 – 8.

Sunday morning Kilmacabea headed to Castletown Kinneigh to met Diarmaid O Mathunas in section one of the junior football league. A strong breeze was a feature of this game also. Kilmacs had the advantage in the opening half. Colin McCarthy opened their scoring with a goal. His brother Karl added a point from a free. Tim Nyhan had two points and Joe Collins added one from centre field, leaving the score at half time 1 – 4 to 0 – 3 for Mathunas. Would it be enough in the circumstances? Some good defending by Kilmacs limited the home side to three scores in the second half, but one of those was a well taken goal. Three points against the breeze, one each from Joe Collins, John O Driscoll and Donie O Donovan brought Kilmacabea’s score to 1 - 7 to D. O Mathunas 1 – 5. A two point victory was a satisfactory enough result in a very competitive encounter.

Sunday evening it was all hands on deck to host the clash between Ilen Rovers and O Donovan Rossa in the Evening Echo Senior Football Championship. Ilen went home happy with their one point victory after extra time. Rossas were disappointed to have let this one slip but they will have another day. Kilmacabea were satisfied that their first ever experience of handling a game at this level had run off smoothly. Sincere thanks to all who helped and a special thank you to the Crowley, O Driscoll and Sheahan families who generously made their property available for car parking.

The Kilmacabea U14 hurlers continued their league campaign with a comprehensive victory over Ilen Rovers in Rath on Thursday 12th May. The U12 footballers were in championship action on Friday 13th May in Rosscarbery when they played Pedlars Cross in Rosscarbery. This was a night when the team as a unit found it hard to get going. Being hit for goals  midway through the first half gave them a uphill battle. To their credit they kept going right to the end on a night when as hard as they worked things did not come off and while they were disappointed the game was a lot closer than the scoreline would suggest. On a poor night for the club the U16 hurlers were also defeated by Sam Maguires in the league.

             Weekly Notes 15 May 2010

The U12 footballers were in championship action on Friday 7/5/10 when they played Gabriel Og in Church Cross and what a game it turned. The Kilmacs hit the ground in fine form and were completely on top throughout the pitch. Controlling possession and combining effectively the team were well in control and looked to be comfortably on their way. A taste of what was to come came with the reminder of a couple of goals from the Gabriel youngsters just before half time to leave the score 2-7 to 2-2 in favour of the Kilmacs. Gabriels started the second half with a goal and when they followed that up with another goal a few minutes later they were now in the lead and the game was turned on its head. Back came the Kilmacs with a goal of their own. The game was now end to end and excitement at fever pitch. Back came Gabriels and pushed ahead with another goal and had another couple of chances hit the post and the bar. The game was now anyone’s. The Kilmacs tacked on a couple of points to bring the game to within a point. The Kilmacs got a goal in the 20th minute and the pendulum was now swinging their way. Gabriels were not letting it go without a fight and were unlucky to see their response again come back off the bar. The Kilmacs had now settled and were able to push on for the scores to win the match. The final score was 5-13 to 5-5 which did not reflect the closeness of a game that could have gone either way. The game was played in the right spirit throughout and was a credit to both sides even if defeat is hard to accept. Team: John Patrick Sheehan, Ellis Wilson, Sean French, Ashling O’Callaghan, Tiernan Kerrisk 0-1, Jamie O’Donoghue, Dan Lynch 1-0, Darren Whooley 2 -1, Ciarán French, Ross Cantwell 1-2, Ian Jennings, Myles Tobin, Damian Gore 1-9, Dylan Morgan.

Weekly Notes 08 May 2010

At this time of the year the U12s are one of the busiest groups giving great excitement to both players and spectators in games that are played with the innocence of the child. Do the players and parents realise that the GAA at the recent congress have taken the decision that the U12 format is to be changed to the “Go Games” format from 2011 for a trial period of 2 years. While it is laudable that everyone gets the opportunity to participate it is also inherent in the education of the child to compete and with that comes learning to cope with winning and losing as part of their development. The Kilmacabea U12 footballers played Clanna Gael in Leap on Monday 26th April. The Kilmacs were the stronger team in the first half taking their scoring chances and were ahead at halftime. The second half was a much different affair and it needed the defence to do its job and a number of fine saves from goalkeeper John Patrick Sheehan to earn the victory. On Monday 3rd May they travelled to Durrus to play the home team. This was an exhibition of excellent football from two evenly matched sides with some superb players. After the Kilmacs had the better of the first quarter and took their scores the game then swung in favour of the home team who went in ahead on the score 1-3 to 0-5. The Kilmacs came out strong again for the third quarter and pushed ahead but back came Muintirvara to forge ahead. The Kilmac youngsters showed great determination to come back and level the game and that was how it finished 3-6 a piece. Team: John Patrick Sheehan, Ellis Wilson, Tiernan Kerrisk, Dylan Morgan, Jamie O’Donoghue, Ashling O’Callaghan, Mark Wilson, Dan Lynch, Darren Whooley 1 -0, Ciarán French 1-1, Ross Cantwell 1-0, Ian Jennings, Myles Tobin 0-1, Damian Gore 0-4, Gareth Whooley, Ashley Deane, Caelan O’Mahony.

            Weekly Notes 24 April 2010

In the many meetings of Kilmacabea and Muintir Bhaire over the past several years there has never been much between them. Their first round tie in this years Maratime Hotel junior 1 football championship again lived up to expectations. Playing in good conditions in Ballydehob, Muintir Bhaire were well on top for most of the first quarter, opening up a four points to nil lead. The remainder of the half saw a good recovery by Kilmacabea to tie up the score at six points each by half time. Most of the second half was a real ding dong affair with never more than the minimum between the sides. In the last minute of normal time Kilmac's centre forward John O Driscoll broke the deadlock with a well taken goal from some distance. However the drama was not quite over. Joe Collins who had made a major contribution to Kilmac's cause found himself on the sideline with a second yellow card. Seven minutes of injury time was played. The western men reduced the lead with a point and had one of their players dismissed. Another point for Kilmacabea restored their goal led and they held out for a hard earned victory. Given their indifferent form in the league to date, they can take some satisfaction in securing their place in the knock out stage of the championship.

            Weekly Notes 17 April 2010

On Friday the 9th Kilmacabea played St. James's in Ardfield in section 1 of the junior football league. Despite playing against the breeze and incline it was evident from early on that the home side meant business. In the 9th minute when they were leading 3 points to 2 they struck for the only goal of the game. Over the next ten minutes they added three more points to open up a formidable lead of seven points. From then to the break Kilmacs came more into the game scoring four points to one for the hosts, leaving the score 1 - 7 to 0 - 6 at the break. Four Kilmac points came from Colin McCarthy (one free) and one each from Ciaran O Donovan and Ger O Donovan who had to retire injured. It was now going to be an up hill struggle for Kilmacs to get something out of the game in the second period and so it proved. The Ardfield boys kept the scoreboard ticking over with five points. Donie O Donovan got one back for the visitors. A 26th minute penalty gave Colin McCarthy an opportunity to make the score more respectable but his shot skimmed over the bar. Final score St. James's 1 - 12 Kilmacabea 0 -0 8. Let's hope that the saying " You learn more when you loose than when you win" has some veracity.

The minor footballers began their season with a home game against St. Colums on Wednesday 7th. As is typical of games at this time of the season players were finding their feet and the team balance. The team put in a creditable performance with the younger players in particular holding their own and the result went the Kilmacs way on the score 3- 10 to 1 – 12. The U16 hurlers also began their season with a home game against Rosscarbery in Leap on Sunday morning 11th April. Again there was a level of experimentation with the team and players. There was a welcome turnout and there was enough ability on display to show that the team is capable of competing for the season. The Kilmacs were the stronger team and the result was a welcome boost, winning on the score 4-7 to 3-4. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam O’Driscoll, Liam Cahalane, Martin Collins, Declan O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Denny Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan, Oisin O’Sullivan, David O’Donovan, Kevin O’Donovan, Euan Tobin.  Castletownbere made the long trip to Leap on Monday night 12th  April to play in the U12 football league. The visitors showed no ill effects of their travel and started brightly and made the early running. The Kilmacs settled and got a boost with a couple of goals mid way through the half. The game continued to be competitive all through but the Kilmacs were that bit sharper in converting their scores and the final winning score did not reflect the competitiveness of the game.

Weekly Notes 10 April 2010

Richie O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes and Declan O’Sullivan were part of the Carbery team that won the Liam Lyne U15 football interdivisional competition on Easter Monday 5th April in Clonakilty. Daniel O’Donovan was part of the Carbery senior football panel that defeated Imokilly in the opening round of the county senior football championship in Brinny also on Monday 5th.
The U12 footballers started their season when Gabriel Og were the visitors to Leap on Monday 5th April. On a terrible night it was a tribute to both sets of players and their enthusiasm that produced an enjoyable game that wasn’t affected by the weather. There wasn’t a lot in this free flowing game but the strength of the Kilmacs in central positions was enough to swing the result their way on the score 4-4 to 1-0. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Jamie O’Donoghue, Tiernan Kerrisk, Ashley Deane, Ashling O’Callaghan, Darren Whooley(1-2), Gareth Whooley, Damian Gore(2-0), Sean French, Ellis Wilson, Ciaran French(1-1), Ross Cantwell, Ian Jennings, Myles Tobin(0-1), Mark Wilson, Caelan O’Mahony, Julieanne Williamson, Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie Ronan.
Some of these players were out again in equally trying conditions in Rossmore on Tuesday night 6th in the U14 Feile football quarter final. With four players not available and others under the weather this was the time for the panel to step up to the mark and show true determination in a game of huge excitement. Having started satisfactorily the Kilmacs were hit for 2 goals of the softer variety  and they had it all to do for the second half behind on the score 2- 2 to 0- 3. This was the time for the team to show their true spirit and even though they went a further point behind at the start of the second half, each and everyone was now giving their all. Slowly they reeled in the gap and finally edged ahead with minutes to go. The game was now end to end with chances for both sides and Kilmeen drew the game with the last kick of normal time. Extra time was now to settle. The first period could still not separate these  two committed teams. Finally in the second period of extra time the Kilmacs edged a two point lead and even though Kilmeen came again the Kilmacs held out for a hard earned victory on the score 0 – 13 to 2 – 5. Team Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Odhran Connolly, Tiernan Kerrisk, Sean French, Daniel O’Sullivan, Aidan Williamson, Euan Tobin(0-1), Martin Collins, Kevin Whooley(0-4), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-8), Eoin O’Sullivan, Ciarán French, Damian Gore, Ruairi O’Mahony, Ruairi Brown.

            Weekly Notes 03 April 2010

Congratulations to Colin McCarthy(1-4)(Aughatubber) and John O’Sullivan(Clounties) who played leading roles in Mount St. Michael's, Rosscarbery’s victory in the Cork Colleges Senior “B” Final. Thomas Jennings(Gortroe), Sean O’Regan(Dunscullib) and Liam Thompson(Kilmacabea) were also members of the team.
Naomh Abán made the long trip to play U14 Feile football under lights in Castlehaven on 23/3/10. The game was played in terrible conditions which suited to the extra strength of the Kilmac’s team who went on to fashion a comprehensive win. It is likely they will play Kilmeen in the next round in the coming week.
Kilmeen came to Leap to play the U16 football league on Monday 29/3/10. Again the better balance of the locals gave them the edge and the result was never in doubt  from early in the game.
Team David O’Donovan, Odhran Connolly, Liam Cahalane, Liam O’Driscoll, Euan Tobin, Martin Collins, Declan O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam Thompson, Tony Shanahan, Denny Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan, Shane McDermott, Kevin O’Donovan, Aidan Williamson.
Martin Collins, Odhran Connolly, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Euan Tobin and Kevin Whooley were part of the Carbery U14 Football panel that took part in a interdivisional blitz in Brinny on Sunday 28/3/10. They beat Muskerry, Imokilly B, Imokilly A but were beaten by Muskerry in the Final game.

            Weekly Notes 28 March 2010

Kilmacabea's first championship game of the season proved very disappointing when their under 21 footballers were heavily defeated by Dohneys last Sunday. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half it was worrying for Kilmacs that they were finding it hard to get into the game out around the middle. However their forwards showed potential to make good use of what supply came their way. They were ahead at half time 2 - 3 to 0 - 5. When Dohneys got the wind behind them they very quickly erased the deficit and the points began to flow. With twenty minutes to go it was just a question of how much would they win by. The final score was 2 - 16 to 2 - 3. To compete at this level Kilmacs needed everything going right for them. On thiis occasion almost nothing went right for them. As the song says "There will be days like this".

Weekly Notes 21 March 2010

Gabriel Rangers travelled to Leap Sunday afternoon last where they met Kilmacabea in their third game in division 1 of the junior football league. In a very competitive game both sides had their periods of dominance. After a shaky opening ten minutes Kilmacs began to dominate around the centre and by half time had opened a gap of 1 – 7 to 0 – 3. All Kilmac scores were from play, the goal coming from the skilful boot of Colin McCarthy.
On the resumption Gabriels pointed a free and were dominating the centre field exchanges but Donie O Donovan pounced on a defensive mix up to grab a somewhat fortuitous goal, giving the home side a nine point lead. However Gabriels made their dominance tell over the middle ten minutes of the half producing two well taken goals and a point to Kilmacs single point. If the westerners had a better return from their free taking they would have overturned the lead. The final ten minutes produced two points for each side. Kilmacabea can count themselves a little lucky to come out the right side of a 2 – 10 to 2 – 7 score line.

The U14 footballers started their season with a game in the Feile football competition vs. Macroom in Macroom on Sunday 14th. After each team had their spells on top half time came with the home team ahead on the score 1-9 to 2-5. The Kilmacs started the second half with the greater determination and were able to convert possession to give them a cushion. Macroom did come again but the Kilmac defence was now tighter and once the Kilmacs pushed on, had the greater strength to win on a score that did not reflect the true balance of the game. Team Matthew O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Odhran Connolly, Gavin Daly(1-0), Tiernan Kerrisk, Daniel O’Sullivan, Aidan Williamson, Euan Tobin(2-1),  Martin Collins(0-5),   Shane McDermott, Diarmaid O’Callaghan(1-3), Jonathon O’Regan, Captain(0-3), Ruairi O’Mahony, Eoin O’Sullivan(0-1), Damian Gore(1-0), Sean French.(1-1).
The Kilmacabea Og  instrumental music group of Ciarán French, Sylvan Morrison, Amy O’Donovan, Iona Tobin and Julieanne Williamson competed in the County final of Scor na bPaistí in Ovens on Sunday 14th.  After an excellent performance they can consider themselves unlucky not to be in the medals and have given great pleasure along the way.
Niall Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan and Declan O’Sullivan played leading roles as part of the Carbery East U14(2009) team that took part in a interdivisional competition and were unlucky to lose by a point to Duhallow  in the final on Monday 8th March under lights at CIT.

Weekly Notes 14 March 2010

The Kilmacabea Og  instrumental music group of Ciarán French, Sylvan Morrison, Amy O’Donovan, Iona Tobin and Julieanne Williamson competed in the County semi final of Scor na bPaistí in Rossmore on Friday 5th and have now qualified for the county final on Sunday 14th March in Ovens at 2.30pm. The club’s wishes go with them. The U16 footballers started their campaign with a good competitive game against Clanna Gael in Drimoleague on Sunday 7th  March. After a good test the result went Kilmac's way on the score 1-8 to 0-6. Team David O’Donovan, Euan Tobin, Liam Cahalane, Liam O’Driscoll, Declan O’Sullivan, Martin Collins, Denny Hayes, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Tony Shanahan, Richie O’Sullivan, Kevin Whooley, Liam Thompson, Oisin O’Sullivan, Odhran Connolly, Kevin O’Donovan, David Kapinski, Jonathon O’Regan, Matthew O’Neill, Gavin Daly.
Either of the junior teams did not do as well as the under sixteens this weekend. Goleen travelled to Leap Saturday afternoon to take on the locals in the junior 2 football league. In chilly but otherwise ideal conditions we were treated to a very competitive game. The experienced John Cullinane garnered a goal for Goleen towards the end of the first quarter. This gave them a cushion which despite Kilmacabea’s best efforts they were to maintain until the end. Final score Goleen 1 – 9, Kilmacabea 0 – 9.

Sunday afternoon Kilmacs travelled to Drimoleague to meet Clan Na nGael in section 1 of the junior football league. Fielding without a number of their first choice players Kilmacabea were forced to live on scraps for much of the game. Their hopes were boosted by the versatile Sam O Driscoll who had a great goal on the twentieth minute. He was injured at the time and had to come off shortly afterwards. The two point lead which this gave the visitors was overhauled by the locals before the break, when the score stood at 0 - 6 to 1 – 2 in Clan’s favour.
On the resumption Ger O Donovan, playing in an unfamiliar defensive position, levelled from a free. Clan Na nGael despite playing into a tricky diagonal breeze completely dominated the third quarter and opened a five point lead and were coasting until Tim Nyhan at full forward pounced on a defensive lapse to rattle the net. It was now a two point game. Ger O Donovan narrowed it to one but time ran out and the home side held on to the league points on a score of 0 – 11 to 2 – 4.

Weekly Notes 07 March 2010

Congratulations to the Kilmacabea instrumental music group who were successful in the Scor Na bPaisti final in Ballydehob on Friday night last. Ciaran French, Amy O Donovan, Sylvan Morrison, Iona Tobin and Julienne Williamson now go forward to the county semi final in Rossmore this Friday night March 5th. The quiz team Eoin O Sullivan, Iona Tobin and Darren Whooley also did well coming second.
Congratulations to Joe Collins who played his part in Cork’s All Ireland winning County Vocational Schools team on Saturday in Carlow.
Kilmacabea’s playing year started on Sunday afternoon with a home game against Muintir Bhaire in division 1 of the junior football league. Played in ideal conditions the first half was a rather typical early season affair. Despite some good football scores were hard to come by. By the interval the home side’s three points from play were matched by the visitors three from frees. However Kilmacs had lost their fullback Niall McCarthy to a second yellow card.
On resumption Muintir Bhaire quickly added two points from play, but their lead was short-lived. A Kilmac point was followed by the best move of the game which was finished to the net by Sam O Driscoll. Upping their work rate to compensate for their numerical disadvantage Kilmacabea had opened a gap of 1 – 11 to 0 – 5 by the 25th minute. Seven different players had contributed to the tally but the effort had taken its toll. They were forced into making the maximum number of substutions. Muintir Bhaire now seized the initiative. A cleverly taken goal from a quick free plus two pointed frees and two more from play in injury time narrowed the gap to two points, but time ran out for them leaving the full time result Kilmacabea 1 – 11 to Muintir Bhaire 1 – 9.

Weekly Notes 10 December 2009

Friday 5th Dec. 2009 was a historic milestone for the club when they held their AGM under their own roof for the first time. In welcoming the sixty members present the chairman Patrick Burke said the new club facilities were testament to what could be achieved by the club when they set their minds to it. Making progress in hurling and football should now be the goal. He said the creditable performance of the under 21A footballers and the success of the under 12 footballers in the SW championship was very encouraging but pride of place had to go to the under 14 footballers who won the SW league and championship and went on to win the county championship, a first for the club at that level. He thanked all who helped in any way to make the year the success it was.The outgoing secretary John O Sullivan then gave a comprehensive account of the clubs activities on and off the field during 2009. He steps down after a decade and a half in that demanding position. The burden has been particularly heavy during the last five years with the upgrading of the club facilities in John William Goulding Park. He now takes on the newly created position of coaching and development coordinator.Pat O Callaghan, longstanding treasurer, as well as giving his customary meticulous account of the years financial transactions, gave an overview of the financing of the club development project, from the purchase of the field from the community council to the official opening last August, a total budget of close on three quarters of a million euro. He stressed the importance of maintaining the fundraising efforts to service the loan which completed the project.
There was only one motion for consideration. William Williamson proposed the appointment of an officer to coordinate coaching and player development in the club. It was seconded by Tom Hayes. After a short discussion it was passed unanimously. This was followed by the election of officers which was very straightforward, there being only one effective nomination for each of three vacancies. Donal O Donovan, who previously served as chairman several years ago, is incoming secretary. Kay Ronan, who has been a very effective member of the finance committee, replaces Michael Tobin as assistant treasurer. Michael continues in his other position as underage PRO. Bart Kerrisk takes charge of the junior football team, replacing Dan Hourihane, who has stepped down after a two years stint.
On the same night Kilmacabea were well represented at the Carbery Scor Na nOg finals in Rossmore. Owen O Sullivan, Iona Tobin and Darren Whooley gave a good display on the Quiz team. The drama group Timmy O Donovan, Daniel O Sullivan, Aidan Williamson, Michelle O Sullivan, Niamh O Driscoll and Mary Rose Shanahan won their competition with a sketch written and produced by Mary O Callaghan. They go on to represent Carbery next Sunday in Coachford. Best of luck to all involved.

Weekly Notes 24 October 2009

The final draw in our series of monthly draws took place recently. The first prize of E500 was won by Donal O Donoghue (jnr.), Maulatrahane. Second prize E200 went to Paddy and Patty Keohane, Cullinagh and third prize E100 was won by Tony Connolly, Reavouler. Consolation prizes of E50 each went to Kevin O Driscoll, Shreelane; Diarmuid French, Knockanacrohy; Peter and Collette Crowley, c/o Cappanabohy and Ciaran and Eoin O Donovan, Milleenanimrish. Five further consolation prizes were then raffled among the contributors who had not won any prize in the twelve monthly draws. They were won by the following; Robert Jennings, Killinga; Eoin Daly, Skibbereen; Pat and Ann Burke, Maulatrahane; Ger O Donovan, Gortnadihy and Pat Calnan, Glandore. The proceeds of the draws serviced the loan which financed the completion of the redevelopment of John William Goulding Park. The finance committee are planning to hold a similar series of draws over the next twelve months.
The junior “C” footballers were in championship action on Friday 16th when they took on Tadgh MacCartaigh in Aughaville. In a typical championship game the team  did not perform to their potential and were unlucky to be beaten on the score 1-3 to 0-5. The U14 footballers played Kilmeen in the semi final of the league on Saturday 17th and while they were made to work hard they responded to record the victory. The Junior “A” footballers played Muintir Bhaire in the final of the junior “A” league in Castlehaven on Sunday 18th. The game had an unfortunate start with Timmy O’Mahony breaking his leg in the first moments. While this was unsettling the Kilmacs showed first and were on top. When John O’Driscoll goaled midway through the half it looked to have set the Kilmacs up. A harsh second yellow just before half time meant the Kilmacs were down to 14 men with the score at 1-5 to 0-2 and should have been further ahead. Muintir Bhaire started the second half strongly and with 4 points in the first 4 minutes (3 from needless frees) the game was wide open. The Kilmacs were competing well but were caught open for a goal midway through the second half and the concession of another scrappy goal minutes later meant the Kilmacs were now chasing the game. Good chances were created but not taken. The final score was 2-8 to 1-6 in a game where victory was within the capacity of the team.
The club wishes Timmy O’Mahony a speedy recovery.

Weekly Notes 17 October 2009

The club and indeed the whole community was plunged into shock and sadness at the recent tragic death of James Hurley, Reenogreena, Glandore. James was one of a talented group of footballers who brought a run of under age success to the club in the nineties. He was on the under 14B championship winning team in ’90 and ’91. Playing in the A grade at under 16 level final success eluded them. As minors in ’94 they brought the first “A” championship to the club at any level. James with his skill and speed always stood out as an attacking wing back. A number of injuries including a serious ankle injury which occurred outside of football put him out of the game for some years. A few years ago he came back to training and again wore the Kilmac jersey at championship level with the second junior team. His father Pat and uncle Billy wore the club colours with distinction a generation earlier. In fact family involvement goes back to our founding in the 1880s. The club extends sincerest sympathy to his fiancée, his parents and all his family. Suaimhneas siorai do
The U12 footballers replayed Caheragh in the league semi final on Saturday 10th  October in Caheragh. Again this was a hugely exciting game with great commitment and skill from both sides. The Kilmacs with the advantage of the wind and sun at their backs started brightly and with some good combination were able to fashion the scores and were good value for there half time lead of 3-5 to 1-5. As expected Caheragh started the second half brightly and soon had the deficit halved. It looked as if the Kilmacs had steadied the flow when Ruairi Brown was at the end of a move to finish to the net after 6 minutes. With an injury after 8 minutes, to Darren Whooley who had been playing well it looked as if the Kilmacs would have it tough to hold on. Instead this was the time for others to raise their game and with everyone playing their hearts out they were able to push on for victory on the score of 5-8 to 3-10.  Team John Patrick Sheehan, Darren Whooley, Tiernan Kerrisk, Iona Tobin, Sean French, Ruairi Brown(1-0),  Eoin O’Sullivan(1-0), Ciaran French, Dan Lynch(0-2), Ross Cantwell, Patrick O’Donovan, Damian Gore(3-6), Isaac O’Shea, Mark Wilson, Caelan O’Mahony, Myles Tobin, Oran Kerrisk, Julie Anne Williamson, Ashling O’Callaghan.

          Weekly Notes 10 October 2009

Two clubs that had the disappointment of an early exit from the junior football championship had the consolation prize of a place in the league final at stake when Clan Na nGael and Kilmacabea met in Leap last Saturday evening. In ideal conditions John O Driscoll got the home side off to a great start with an early goal. All his fellow forwards had got on the score sheet with points from play by the end of the first quarter. The visitors had replied with a point. A positional switch at centre field for Clan Na nGael changed the game completely. Kilmacs rearguard were pressurised into conceding frees. An excellent display of free taking (five out of five from a good distance out) and four more points play had the northern neighbours ahead by the minimum at the break.
Another placed ball just after resumption stretched the gap to two points. Ger O Donovan had two pointed frees to level it. It was now ding dong until a well taken goal after twelve minutes boosted the visitors. John O Driscoll and Ger O Donovan were on target from play to narrow the gap. The first quarter had gone Kilmacs’ way; the second quarter to C. Na G. the third was nip and tuck. In a very competitive game who had something left for the last quarter? Kilmacs were able to call on some fresh legs from their bench, a department where their opponents appeared limited. Donie O Donovan and Donncha McCarthy had some great running left in them. Ruarai Hourihane capped a great run by shaking the Clan Na nGael net. Two further points from play gave a final score of Kilmacabea 2-17, Clan Na nGael 1- 13. Our old friends Muintir Bhaire await us in the final.

The U12 footballers played Caheragh in the league semi final on Saturday 3rd October in Leap. This turned out to be a fiercely exciting game with a wholehearted effort from both sides. The Kilmacs started brightly and were on top for the first 20 minutes. Caheragh got on top then and were well worth their half time lead of 5 points on the score of 3-6 to 2-4. The Kilmacs came out with renewed effort in the second held with the game flowing from  end to end . With a improved defensive performance the Kilmacs closed the gap and went ahead. It looked as if Caheragh might have come at the right time when they got a late goal to put them ahead but the Kilmacs kept going and got their reward with a equalising point. Final score 5-8 each and justice to both sides for another day. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Darren Whooley, Tiernan Kerrisk, Iona Tobin, Sean French, Ruairi Brown, Matthew O’Neill, Eoin O’Sullivan, Ciaran French, Dan Lynch, Ross Cantwell, Patrick O’Donovan, Damian Gore, Isaac O’Shea, Mark Wilson, Caelan O’Mahony, Myles Tobin, Oran Kerrisk.

          Weekly Notes 03 October 2009

Our second junior football team were rewarded for their comitment during the year when they captured the shield which is awarded to the winners of their league. The final against Clan Na nGael was played in ideal conditions in Leap last Saturday evening. A late goal for the visitors made it an exciting finish but Kilmacs held out on a ful time score of 1-8 to 1-6. Well done to player/manager Peadar O Laoire and his team. Trophies at adult level are greatly appreciated in the club. They still have the chance of adding the championship to it. The same clubs are also due to meet in the semi final of the junior one league. That game is to be played in Drimoleague this Saturday evening.
Supporters of the County Board Club Draw will have received corispondence about it recently. If you wish to participate for the coming year can do so by contacting any member of the club.
The club has been involved in various age groups in recent weeks without much success. The minor footballers played the final against Gabriel Rangers in Castlehaven on Saturday 12/9/09. This was a highly entertaining game with great excitement. The Kilmacs put in a great effort and showed great spirit right to the end even after several heartbreaking incidents and were extremely unlucky with the result going against them(4-12 to 6-9) mainly as a result of the concession of goals that might have been prevented on another day. Not being able to wear their own strip was unsettling especially in a final. The u12 hurlers were also in championship action. They showed the benefit of their efforts with a welcome win over St. Colums which set them up for a  semi final vs. Barryroe in Rossmore on 15/9/09. They gave their all but their lack of strength and years was to prove a bridge too far. Well done for preserving thro the year as they have been up against much stronger teams in personnel and experience and it would have  been much easier not to bother. The U 16 hurlers were in action against Ardfield on 14/9/09 in Unionhall. The lack of games played by this group (due to the success of other groups) was to prove a major drawback. By the time they settled the game was already out of reach. They kept their heads up and showed what they could have done if they had got some time to prepare properly and this is disappointing as the ability is there.

         Weekly Notes 13 september 2009

After all the wet weather and difficulties with pitches the uncertainty was over with the fixing of the County U14 Football Final for Castletownkenniegh on Saturday 5/9/09. The day was dry and while there was a strong wind, it was a good day for the match given conditions during the week. Aghinagh started brightly and had the first  score but Richie O’Sullivan soon cancelled that. The Kilmacs had the advantage in possession but Aghinagh defended excellently and scores were at a premium. Diarmuid O’Callaghan then finished a good flowing move with a goal in the 8th minute. The Kilmacs began to convert the possession with further scores from Diarmuid O’Callaghan were ahead 1- 4 to 0-1 after 16 minutes. Aghinagh had looked dangerous on the break and they had a bit of luck when a long range effort ended in the back of the net off the post. They followed this up with a good move to score a second goal to level the match shortly afterwards. The Kilmacs while winning the possession were not being allowed to play with their usual fluency. They edged ahead again in the 22nd minute with a point from Diarmuid O’Callaghan but suffered another set back in the 26th minute when a speculative lob again ended up in the net. The Kilmacs after being the better team went in at the interval 2 points behind on the score of  1-5 to 3-1 and the large crowd of followers were a little worried that maybe this wasn’t to be their day. This was now the time for the team to show their true worth and they came out for the second half in determined mood. Diarmuid O’Callaghan soon added another point and the Kilmacs were now opening the game up and making space for themselves. The turning point came when after a fine move the length of the pitch Euan Tobin was on hand to blast to the net. This was followed soon after when Jonathan O’Regan who was to prove a very effective sub, did well to win possession and was coolness itself to pick his spot for the goal that was to signal a complete take over. The Kilmacs were now on top in all sectors of the pitch. Aghinagh continued to battle bravely and to their credit never gave up but the Kilmacs continued to increase the margin with some fine long range points from Niall Hayes(2) and Diarmuid O’Callaghan. In the 22nd minute Euan Tobin  took a pass from Richie O’Sullivan after another flowing move to fire a fine goal and the game was effectively over. Aghinagh gamely kept going but the Kilmacs were now playing confidently even though a lot of scoring opportunities were not taken. Richie O’Sullivan capped a fine individual performance with a great goal in the 25th minute. Aidan Williamson made an instant impression when he was at the end of another move soon after to score another goal. From here it was a matter of playing out time, for the Kilmacs to record a famous victory and the first county title for the underage club. The final score was Kilmacabea 6-9 Aghinagh 3-1. The trophy was presented by Míchéal Mac Suibhne, Runaí Bord na n-Og an Chondae to captain Niall Hayes amid scenes of great celebration. This was a fine team performance with each and every player contributing his part as they have done through the year. Shane O’Neill was unlucky with the shots that beat him but was very solid and made some important stops and used the clearances effectively. Declan O’Sullivan was masterful in defence with nothing getting by him and was also able to get forward himself. Darren Whooley won everything that came his way often against fellows twice his size. Martin Collins at centreback was out standing throughout the game, unbeatable and driving forward at every opportunity. Odhran Connolly had a very impressive performance and was another who was unbeatable. Daniel O’Sullivan capped his season with a super display and was first to everything and used it effectively. Niall Hayes(0-2) with the ability that we have come to expect showed the leadership needed in the sticky patches and got through a huge amount of work to drive the team on. Euan Tobin(2-0) linked well with those around him especially going forward and found the scoring zone when it was needed. Richie O’Sullivan(1-1) was unstoppable at centre forward showing superb skill matched by work rate. Diarmuid O’Callaghan(1-6)again showed his scoring ability as the leading scorer even if he had more wides than his normal high conversion rate. Eoin O’Sullivan showed his skill and linked very well as part of the attack. Shane McDermott won plenty of ball and played his part. Kevin Whooley worked hard, linked well and was very unlucky especially with a number of goal scoring chances. Jonathan O’Regan(1-0) made a huge impact showing both his football ability and competitive attitude. Aidan Williamson(1-0) and Matthew O’Neill also played their part. Other members of the panel were David Kapinski, Tiernan Kerrisk, Kevin O’Donovan, Ruairí O’Mahony and Isaac O’Shea. The players achieve the reward they have earned but it is also due to the work of the mentors William Williamson and Tom Hayes with them throughout the year and the huge input of coach Kevin O’Driscoll which has had a massive impact on the success of this group. Well done to all for the pleasure you have given.  See  below  for more images of the day.
While this was the big event of the week other teams have also been playing away. No less important are the  U10 footballers  who have been playing with varying degrees of success but are developing their knowledge of the game and will hopefully follow the example set for them in the future.
In our September draw first prize was won by Mary twomey & Deirdre O Donovan, Coornishal. Second prize went to Peter O Callaghan, Dungannon and third to Marian Nealon, Riverdale. Consolation prizes were won by Anthony Cahalane, Clonkeen; Thomas & Karen Sheahan, Leap; Paul O Donovan, Kilbeg and Suzanne Burke, Maulatrahane

Kilmacs second junior team had home advantage Sunday morning when they took on Barryroe in the first round of the championship. Weather conditions were not the best but Peadar O Laoire’s charges came out on the right side, on a score of 1-12 to 1-8.
The passing of Den Murphy, Cashel calls to mind the exciting days of the Connonagh GAA club. He was the youngest and last surviving member of the team which captured the S.W. Junior B Football title in 1942, the first year of their existence.   Later in the decade he played with St. Patrick’s a club drawing players from a fairly wide radius around Leap. They got to the Junior A final in 1950, being narrowly defeated by Bandon. As Den put it, “Seanie Crowley and Co, they were not too good for us, but they were too cute for us”. Sean and Den died within a day of each other. Suaimneas siorai doibh.

The minor footballers played Argideen Rangers in the semi-final of the championship on Friday 27/8/09 in Rossmore. Starting brightly and creating chances they got the boost of an early goal from Colin McCarthy which gave them the advantage for the first quarter. As the game settled there was little between the teams and the Kilmacs went in at the break ahead on the score 2-6 to 1-3 after playing with the advantage of the diagonal wind. The third quarter was crucial and the Kilmacs continued to hold the advantage. When Argideen goaled from a penalty in the 26th minute it looked as if things could go wrong. Now as all through the game the team showed their resolve and were able to push on and close out the game with a fine move resulting in a goal to give victory on the score 3-10 to 2-6. This was a victory based on a great attitude and commitment by all the players working for each other and never giving up. Team Liam Cahalane, Joseph O’Callaghan, Thomas Jennings, Colman O’Riordan, Denny Hayes, Joseph Collins(0-2), Liam Thompson, Colin McCarthy(1-7), Padraig Burke, Padraig French(1-0), Richard Jennings(0-1). Subs Finnan Tobin, Sean O’Regan(1-0),Padraig McCarthy, Liam O’Driscoll, Oisin O’Sullivan.
The U14 footballers have continued their progress in the county championship with a victory over Castletownbere in the quarter final on 20/8/09 in Leap and followed that with a victory over Kiskeam on 31/8/09 in Inchigeelagh in the semi-final.
It is likely that this final could be played this weekend, so check locally for details and go and give them the support their displays have earned. There are likely to be other fixtures on as well so keep a check on notice board by Horse Shoe café and Cowhigs Filling station for them also.

Weekly Notes 22 August 2009

Congratulations to Daniel O'Donovan who played a starring role in Corks victory over Roscommon in the All Ireland junior football championship final played in Portlaoise on Saturday 22/8/09.
The U14 footballers played Barryroe in the final of the championship on Monday 17th August 2009 in Clonakilty. Going into any final there is always a sense of trepidation. Early indications were that this would be a tight affair. The start was extremely competitive and while the Kilmacs had a slight advantage they were getting little return. After 10 minutes the game settled and it was then the Kilmacs showed their true capability. Taking control in the vital positions and with superb use of possession they began to create scores. Driving on to dominate from here to half time,  and with important goals coming from Richie O’Sullivan in the 20th minute and Shane McDermott in the 27th minute, they went in at half time well in control, on the score of 2-14 to 1-3. While Barryroe did get an early goal the Kilmacs continued with some excellent football to create fine scores and ran out convincing winners on the score 2-28 to 1-6. While the score makes the result look easy, Barryroe did put in a good effort and the result was achieved due to a super work ethic, excellent teamwork and use of the ball and was a powerhouse performance. Shane O’Neill in goal dealt capably with what came his way and his kicking was important. In front of him Darren Whooley’s reading of the game was far ahead of his years. Declan O’Sullivan’s athleticism was fantastic, covering acres of ground and initiating attack after attack. Martin Collins(0-1) was huge at the centre of defence with Odhran Connolly and Daniel O’Sullivan showing up well either side of him. Niall Hayes(0-8) and Richie O’Sullivan(1-1) were truly outstanding around the middle, competing everywhere from defence to attack and showing true leadership, as would be expected of them. The attack combined skilfully and effectively to fashion the scores. Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-10) showed consistent accuracy from all areas, with Kevin Whooley(0-4) showing well for possession. Euan Tobin(0-1), Eoin O’Sullivan, and Shane McDermott(1-0) all contributed handsomely. Sub Jonathon O’Regan showed excellent skill and contributed 3 fine points and the other subs who contributed were Aidan Williamson, Kevin O’Donovan and Ruairi O’Mahony . Subs also were David Kapinski, Isaac O’Shea, Tiernan Kerrisk, Patrick O’Donovan.  In reviewing the winning margin it has to be remembered that when these sides played at U10 level Barryroe won by in excess of 20 points and the Kilmacs only scored one point ! and when they played at U12 Barryroe won by 9 or 10points.The improvement that has been achieved is a tribute to the attitude and approach of the players themselves, the efforts of their mentors William Williamson and Tom Hayes and the outstanding coaching and commitment of Kevin O’Driscoll in the last couple of years. Congratulations on a well earned victory.

The U12 hurlers played St. Colums in Leap on Wednesday 5th. After a good competitive game the greater strength of the visitors gave them the advantage on the score 7-1 to 1-9. The U12 footballers also played Timoleague in the league on Monday 10th August in Leap. With a number of players missing they had to give second best to a well drilled outfit.
Congratulations to Daniel O Donovan on his great contribution to the football championship victories of Carbery and Cork during the week.

Adrian Healy, Ballahilloe, won the first prize in our club draw for August. John Walsh, Corran School won the second and third went to Lar Casey, Glandore. Consolation prizes were won by Helen Quirke, Glandore; Chris Walsh, Toughbawn; Ml. & Ann O Callaghan,c/o Maulatrahane and Margaret & Finbarr O Driscoll, Kilsarlaght.

Weekly Notes 08 August 2009

Kilmacabea parish dates back into the mists of history and Kilmacabea GAA club dates back to the early years of the organisation. In the history of the club and parish there can have been few more memorable days than last Saturday the 1st of August. To be present at the official opening of the new club house and refurbished grounds in John William Goulding Park was a heart-warming experience. All strands of the community were represented there. Former players in their eighties were there. Some of them had spent half a lifetime in other parts. Infants in pushchairs were there, far too young to comprehend the significance of the occasion. With a bit of luck some of them may well live to see the turn of the next century. They will be able to tell their grandchildren or even great-grandchildren they were there. The grandson and namesake of the captain David O Brien who led the first Kilmacabea football team in 1888 was there. The churches, the state, the local authority, the West Cork, County board and Munster council of GAA were all well represented, as well as neighbouring clubs and other organisations from within the parish. Messages of congratulations were received from others who were unable to attend. Those who spoke were full of praise for the standard of the development, the quality of the finish and the attention to detail in the presentation for the day. The club officers and members and all their voluntary helpers knew it wasn’t mere flattery, because in our hearts we had the satisfaction of knowing we had done a good job. Whoever controls the great cosmic forces must have concurred also. The dismal weather which has seldom been far away this summer, cleared about 6.30pm Friday in time for the start of our weekend’s programme. We had pleasant sunshine all day Saturday and the rain didn’t return until lunchtime Sunday just as our outdoor events came to a close.
A football game between our second junior squad and the Naval Service Friday evening was rather one sided in the first half. A couple of hastily commissioned local recruits joined the visitors at half time and ensured the second half was quite a competitive affair. Both panels and all our underage players were treated to a barbeque after. On Saturday after the opening ceremony Bandon played our junior 1 team in a challenge match. A draw was the very appropriate result for the occasion. A minor football match against Kilmeen brought outdoor activities to a close, on a day to remember for all Kilmacs.  On Sunday morning those of us sufficiently recovered from Saturday’s festivities were treated to a very competitive 7 a side football contest. With one game left Carbery Rangers had won two. Ilen Rovers, O Donovan Rossas and Kilmacs had one each. From somewhere Kilmacs summoned enough energy to pip Rangers in that game and set up a final between the two. A lucky goal gave Kilmacs a one point final victory, so the trophies for the historic occasion grace the home sideboard. To all the visiting teams, mentors and referees and all who helped in any way to make the weekend such an unqualified success, our sincere thanks.

The U14 footballers were in championship action when they took on Ahan Gaels on Wednesday 29th July 2009 in Timoleague. Making light of playing against the wind and the fall they made an excellent start and this was the platform for the result. The action was competitive but the Kilmacs had the edge defensively and with good combination and movement the Kilmacs were using the ball effectively to get scores and went in ahead on the score 3-9 to 0-4. Ahan Gaels came out in the second half and showed their mettle and put in a good effort as they tried to save the game. Gaining the upper hand for the third quarter, they started to reduce the gap and looked like they may be able to succeed. When it looked as if they may run into trouble the Kilmacs came again to put the game safe. This was a good test for the team and the game was much tighter than the 3-17 to 1- 9 scoreline would suggest. Man of the match on the night was Declan O’Sullivan who was outstanding. Team Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Declan O’Sullivan, Odrahan Connolly, Martin Collins(0-1), Daniel O’Sullivan, Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes(0-4), Eoin O’Sullivan(0-1), Richie O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-8), Shane McDermott(0-1), Kevin Whooley(3-2), Johnaton O’Regan, Isaac O’Shea, Kevin O’Donovan, Ruairi O’Mahony, Patrick O’Donovan.  The U12 footballers played Caheragh on Saturday morning 1/8/09 in Leap as part of the weekends celebrations. Playing well they were on to top going into the last quarter when tiredness got the better of them. Under severe pressure they held on for victory with John Patrick Sheehan making some vital stops in goal and Iona Tobin making some important clearances. Final score 3-7 to 2-6. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Darren Whooley, Ruairi Brown, Sean French, Eoin O’Sullivan(0-1), Isaac O’Shea(1-0), Ross Cantwell, Dan Lynch(0-3), Timmie O’Donovan, Damian Gore(1-2), Mark Wilson(1-1), Iona Tobin, Dylan Morgan.

The day so many people in the parish have worked so hard towards is at hand. The Official Opening of our new Club House and our refurbished playing field takes place this Saturday at 2pm. The programme starts Friday evening with an under 10 match at 6pm followed by a junior 2 match between the locals and the Naval Service. Participants will be treated to a barbecue afterwards and entertained by local traditional talent. Saturday morning it will be the turn of the under 12s to strut their stuff on the pitch. After the official opening which will be performed by Mr Jimmy O Gorman Chairman of the Munster Council a challange football match will be played between Kilmacabea and Bandon. This should recall some great clashes in the past for many people. This will be followed by a minor match. Some tickets are still available for the for the Celebration Banquet in the Club House on Saturday at 8pm. Professional caterers have hired in for the occasion and music will be provided by the Musicmakers. Full bar facilities are available for the weekend.
The junior 1 seven a side tournament will take place on Sunday morning. The resceduling of this and the minor game is as a result of the Cork v. Donegal match, which will be available to viewers in the Club House on Sunday afternoon. Everybody is welcome to all these events and admission is free, except to the Banquet on Saturday evening which is an all ticket affair. Come along and celebrate this great occasion in the history of the club and the parish.
Congratulations to Niall Hayes, Roury who performed well as part of the Cork U14 football development squad that won an inter-county blitz on the weekend 18th July. On the weekend of 25th Niall was part of the Carbery U14  hurling team. The U10 footballers had a good test away to Kilmeen on Thursday 23rd. The U12 footballers made the long trip to Eyries worthwhile with a hard earned victory against Urhan on Saturday 25th July. This was a good display by the players available who showed great spirit to win a tight competitive game where everyone had to do their part and it was a chance for the younger players to show their value. The final score was 3-10 to 3-8 in difficult conditions. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Dylan Morgan, Ruairi Brown, Sean French, Iona Tobin, Eoin O’Sullivan(1-7), Isaac O’Shea, Ross Cantwell, Dan Lynch, Timmie O’Donovan, Damian Gore(2-3), Mark Wilson, Oran Kerrisk, Myles Tobin.

The U-12 hurlers travelled to Ballydehob to take on the home team in the league. In the first half the Kilmacs played well and were worth the half time lead of 1-2 to 0-1 an should have been further ahead. In the second half there was a big improvement in he home team and the game was even. Gabriels got the upper hand and went ahead but the Kilmacs made a brave effort to turn the game and would have won but for a point blank save by the goalkeeper in the dying minutes. The final score was Kilmacabea 3-2 Gabriel Og 3-4 but it was a enjoyable game for all Team Ellis Wilson, Dylan Morgan, Tiernan Kerrisk(1-0), Myles Tobin, Darren Whooley(1-1), Eoin O’Sullivan(0-1), Ross Cantwell(1-0), Christy Wilson, Karl Ronan, DJ Glanton, Odran Kerrisk, Dara Tobin.
Preparations are well under way on the finishing touches to the grounds and clubhouse in readiness for next weekend Saturday 1st August when all are welcome to the opening , the culmination of over 4 years work.

          Weekly Notes 11 July 2009

The minor footballers received a welcome boost on Wednesday 1st July when they took on Gabriel Rangers in Ballydehob. Having struggled with injuries and numbers it has been a test of their commitment. Things looked bad again when they were 3 goals down within minutes of the start and it looked as if they would be overrun. Gradually they settled and got to grips defensively but they were still 7 points down at half time. Keeping their focus they were able to create the chances and were able to turn the game around in the second half for a well earned win by 6 points.
The U14 footballers played Barryroe on Thursday 2nd July in Leap. When these sides met at U12 level Barryroe were the better team and while the game was competitive, the Kilmacs showed their improvement and went on to win this game convincingly. They were in action again on Saturday when they played Skibbereen and again were well on top. Team Matthew O’Neill, Shane O’Neill, Euan Tobin, Odhran Connolly, Martin Collins, Darren Whooley, Richie O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Ruairi O’Mahony, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Aidan Williamson, Kevin O’Donovan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Jonathon O’Regan.

          Weekly Notes 04 July 2009

What a difference a point makes. Kilmacabea junior 1 football team have played eleven games this year to date. They won nine of those with a bit to spare and lost two by a single point. Unfortunately those were the two that mattered most, the championship games.  The second round game against Tadhg MacCathraig’s was played last Monday evening in near perfect conditions in Rosscarbery. In the first half Kilmacs were dominating centre field where Kevin O Sullivan was repeating his heroics of the under 21 championship game earlier in the year. Under pressure MacCathraig’s defence were conceding frees. Daniel O Donovan put four of them over the bar. Five of the six forwards had points from play. Caheragh were limited to two points, one from play. Surely the ghosts which have haunted Kilmacs at this level for so long would at least have their wings clipped, if not be laid to rest. In hindsight a couple of incidents before the break were to prove significant. A good goal chance was deflected for a fruitless 45 and a hand injury to Kevin O Sullivan must have been more serious than was thought at the time because he faded out of the game afterwards.
In the second half Tadhg MacCathraig’s called on all their experience at this level to redeem their situation. They crowded the mid field area and left plenty of space to two very mobile inside forwards. The trend of the first half was completely reversed. By the end of the third quarter the gap was down to two points. A pointed free failed rally Kilmacabea. By the second last minute the now rampant Caheragh men had levelled from play and in the final minute floated over the winner. To the victors go the spoils. We wish them well in the remaining rounds.
On Wednesday 24th the second junior team continued their good run in section 3 of the league, with a win over Muintir Bhaire at home. While both teams were guilty of some wayward shooting, it was a much more competative game than the final score suggests. Kilmacabea 0-11; Muintir Bhaire 0-3.
The U14 footballers had a good test against Kilmeen in Rossmore on Thursday 25/6/09 and came away with a win. Barryroe were the visitors to Leap for a entertaining evenings football for the U10’s on Thursday 25/6/09.
The minor footballers played Ardfield in Ardfield on Wednesday 24/6/09 and after a good game lost out on the score 5-8 to 4-10. The U-16 footballers made the trip to Durrus worthwhile with a victory over the home team on Sunday 28/6/09

          Weekly Notes 27 June 2009

The second junior football team had an easy victory Oliver Plunkett’s in a very one sided game, keeping up their good run in section 3 of the league. Congratulations to Daniel O Donovan and Ruairi Hourihane and their team mates on Carbery’s good win in the senior football championship. The second round match in the junior football championship between Kilmacabea and Tadhg MacCathraig’s goes ahead on Monday evening next at 8pm in Rosscarbery.

The U-16’s footballers resumed their league campaign with a home match against near neighbours Castlehaven on Sunday 21/6/09. Playing with good skill and commitment they were able to create the scores to fashion a comfortable victory with goals coming from Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Eamon O’Sullivan, Oisin O’Sullivan and Liam Thompson. Team – Denny Hayes, David O’Donovan, Liam Cahalane, Liam O’Driscoll, Niall Hayes, Tony Shanahan, Declan O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Sullivan, Richie O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Padraig French, Oisin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Jonathon O’Regan. The U12 hurlers continued with a home game against Skibbereen and after a hugely competitive and sporting game played in great excitement put up a great performance before losing out on the score 6-4 to 4-3. Team Ellis Wilson, Dylan Morgan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Myles Tobin, Darren Whooley(1-3), Ciáran French, Matthew O’Neill(2-0), Eoin O’Sullivan, Ross Cantwell, Luke Read(1-0), Christy Wilson, Karl Ronan, DJ Glanton, Odran Kerrisk, Oran Hogan, Sean Burke, Colin Twomey, Stephen O’Donovan.

The first prize winner in the June club draw was Pat O Callaghan, Droum; second May Cahalane, Maulatrahane and third Eileen Tobin, Kilfinnin. Consolation prizes went to Jonathan Hill, Clonkeen Hs.; Eabha O Donovan, c/o Bawnfune; Aidan Glavin and Maureen Crowley

        Weekly Notes 20 June 2009

Kilmacabea played Gabriel Rangers in Ballydehob last Sunday morning in section one of the junior football league. With most of the panel available for selection, in good playing conditions, Kilmacs recorded a surprisingly easy victory, keeping up their good performance in the competition. At the time of writing it is expected that the second round championship game against Tadhg MacCarthaigs will be played in Rosscarbery on Monday evening week, June 29th.
The U-14 hurlers took on Ahán Gaels at Ahiohill in the championship on Friday 12th June. With no great expectations the team produced an outstanding performance and while they didn’t get the result their performance deserved it was an exciting display. With every player doing his part and the central players leading the way they took the game to the opposition in all areas of the pitch. They went in ahead at 1-3 to 0-2 and but for some excellent saves by the opposing keeper would have been further ahead. A couple of incomplete clearances gave away  a couple of goals at the start of the second half were to prove costly and try as they might they couldn’t close the gap and lost out on the score 4-5 to 2-4. The wides tally (Kilmacabea 14, Ahan Gaels 4) tells its own story. Team Kevin Whooley, Odrahan Connolly, Richie O’Sullivan, Shane O’Neill, Niall Hayes, Euan Tobin, Declan O’Sullivan, Martin Collins, Darren Whooley, Stephen Crowley, Daniel O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Matthew O’Neill.

       Weekly Notes 13 June 2009

Saint Colum's travelled to Leap last Saturday evening to meet the home side in section 1 of the junior football league. At the end of a very fine week, it turned into a misirable evening for football, with a stiff crossfield wind and cold rain. It was no surprise that scoring proved difficult for both sides. At the end of a very competetive first half the score stood at five points to four in favour of Kilmacabea. The second half continued in the same vain with never more than a margin of a point or two. If either side could snatch a goal it would probably prove to be a match winner. An oppertunity fell to Kilmac substitute John C. Keohane but it was deflected for a fortyfive. John O Driscoll took the resultant free and the ball dipped into the top corner for a somewhat fortuitous goal. Final score Kilmacabea 1-8; St. Colum's 0-6. A week earlier Kilmac's second junior team had a good win over their Ballinascarty counterperts in their section of the football league.

The U-14 hurlers took on Bantry at Bantry in the league on Thursday 4th June. The physical advantage of the home team gave them the first half freedom and they availed of it to score some fine long range points and were well in control at half time. A huge all round improvement in work rate saw the Kilmacs dominate the first 20 minutes of the second half and come within touching distance. As will happen the stronger team were able to last the pace and the home team were able in the final minutes to give themselves the winning advantage. The U12 hurlers have also been  gallantly playing their games but as they are not strong enough  for their grade they will find it very difficult to compete, which is disappointing for their efforts.
Congratulations to Daniel O Donovan and his team mates on Cork's victory over Kerry in the junior football championship. Let's hope the seniors emulate them this weekend. Also congratulations to Kathleen Daly, Aghatubber on her win in the County Board Draw.

Weekly Notes 06 June 2009

The U-12 footballers played the final of their championship when they took on Oliver Plunketts in Ardfield  on Wednesday 27th May. The game started in typical championship spirit with both sides working hard. The Kilmacs defence was able to deal with the  attacks and this served as a platform for the team. Combining well and working hard they were able to create the scores to give them the advantage which they were able to hold all the way to give them the victory. Captain Eoin O’Sullivan showed his leadership in the winning speech and all went home happy with their nights work after playing their part. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Sean French, Darren Whooley, Ciarán French, Ruairi Brown, Matthew O’Neill, Eoin O’Sullivan, Ross Cantwell, Damian Gore, Tiernan Kerrisk, Isaac O’Shea, Iona Tobin, Shane Collins, Karl Ronan, Mark Wilson, Dylan Morgan, Timmie O’Donovan, Aishling O’Callaghan, Julie Anne Williamson, Shannon Ronan. Many of these players were in action, with varying degrees of success, the following day in The Sciath na Scoil finals held in Ballineen. First up were the boys of Maultrahane who turned in a balanced and controlled performance to beat Caheragh N.S and  retain their title. Next up were the girls of Glandore making  their first final appearance had to give way to a powerful team from Ahiohill. Next were the girls of Maultrahane who retained their title for the seventh year with a fine performance against Darra. Finally the boys of Leap National school had to give way to a finely balanced team from Lisheen. Well done to all who took part and to all who worked with them. Saturday 30th May was a important date in the lives of the newest generation of footballers when the U10/8’s had a enjoyable morning when they travelled to play Ardfield and gave a good account of themselves.

Weekly Notes 30 May 2009

The U-12 footballers made the trip to Adrigole on Sunday morning 17th May and were able to put in a satisfactory performance to make the journey worthwhile. They were then in action against Mizen Rovers on Thursday 21st May in Skibbereen. This was a typical championship match with little between the sides. After an exciting match which could have gone either way the Kilmacs made the most of their opportunities to gain victory. The U14 hurlers played their first match of the season when they travelled to play Barryroe on Monday 25th May. The team started brightly and made the early impression As the game settled Barryroe were more in the game and the Kilmacs went in at half time ahead on the score 1-2 to 0-4. When Barryroe got the first score of the second half it looked as if they might push on but instead it was the all round work rate of the Kilmacs which  gave them the upper hand. As a hard working unit they struck for the vital scores to take a welcome victory on the score 5 – 3 to 0 – 7. Team Kevin Whooley(1-0), Stephen Crowley, Odhran Connolly, Shane O’Neill, Niall Hayes, Euan Tobin, Declan O’Sullivan, Martin Collins(0-3), Shane McDermott(1-0), Richie O’Sullivan(1-0), Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Eoin O’Sullivan(1-0), Daniel O’Sullivan, Kevin O’Donovan, Darren Whooley(1-0), Tiernan Kerrisk, Ruairi O’Mahony.
The minor footballers continued their non exam league with a game against Clondrohid in Leap on Tuesday 19th May  2009. The team showed the benefit of playing games with a much improved performance. While exchanges were even the Kilmacs didn’t take their  opportunities and went in behind on the score 0-5 to  0-4.The early exchanges of the second half were again even but when Joseph Collins broke through for 2 goals it set the Kilmacs on their way to a deserved victory. Kilmacabea 2-9 Clondrohid 0- 6. Team Liam Cahalane, Sean O’Regan, Colman O’Riordan, Padraig Burke, Eamon O’Sullivan, Denny Hayes, Joseph Collins(2-0), Colin McCarthy(0-8), Liam Thompson(0-1), Richard Jennings, Oisin O’Sullivan, Padraig French, David O’Donovan.

Bandon travelled to Leap Tuesday evening last to play Kilmacabea in the junior football league. At the end of a remarkable first quarter the score was two goals to one in Kilmacs favour. However they had lost capable defender Adrian O Driscoll to a second yellow card and full back Ciaran O Donovan was soon to limp off injured. Twenty-two minutes had elapsed before the first point of the game was scored. The half time score was Kilmacabea 2-4, Bandon 1-2.
With the extra man Bandon opting for the passing running game had narrowed the margin to the minimum before a third Kilmac goal eased the pressure on the home side. With twenty minutes to go, could they hold out? The answer was yes they could. They scored three further points to Bandon’s four. Final score Kilmacabea 3-8, Bandon 2-8. Scorers for Kilmacs Joseph Collins 2-0; John O Driscoll 1-1; Ger O Donovan 0-4 (0-1 free); Daniel O Donovan 0-2 (0-1free); Donie O Donovan 0-1.

The U-12 footballers were in championship action against Oliver Plunketts in Ardfield on Tuesday 12th May. Taking full advantage of playing with the strong evening sun at their backs they hit the ground positively. With each player showing excellent work rate and technique and playing with great awareness they were able to combine effectively for some fine scores.  Team -Isaac O’Shea, Ruairi Brown, Darren Whooley, Ciarán French, Sean French, Matthew O’Neill, Eoin O’Sullivan, Ross Cantwell, Dan Lynch, Damian Gore, Tiernan Kerrisk, Shane Collins, Karl Ronan, Dylan Morgan, Iona Tobin, John Patrick Sheehan, Mark Wilson,  Julie Anne Williamson, Andrew O’Donovan, Shannon Ronan.
The minor footballers started their non exam league with a game against Iveleary in Leap on Tuesday 5th May  2009. The players available put in a good effort but had a difficult task against stronger opposition.
The first prize this month in our club draw was won by John Jago, Toughmacdermody. The second went Ciaran and Eoin O Donovan, Cullinagh and third Bart Kerresk, Cullane. Consolation prizes were won by Tadhg Kearney, Bunalun; Jerry and Mary Claire O Donovan, Leap; Adrian O Driscoll, Derryleigh and James and Diarmuid O Donovan, Droum Hs.

Weekly Notes 01 May 2009

Despite the strong wind and difficult underfoot conditions following the rain earlier in the day a lot of good football was played in the Junior A football Championship game between Kilmacabea and Muintir Bhaire in Ballydehob last Saturday evening. A notable feature was, that Kilmacs scored 1 -10 of their 1-11 tally from play. Daniel O Donovan scored 1-5, having started at centre field and moved in nearer to goal in the second half. Some of his points were tremendous long range efforts.  Five of the six forwards got on the scoreboard and Tom Sheahan from the centre back chipped in with a point. But as the saying goes goals win games and Muintir Bhaire bagged one in injury time in each half. Kilmacs replied with a quick point in the first half but the final whistle denied them that opportunity in the second half. Muintir Bhaire winners by a point, now go directly into round three. Kilmacabea must face the losers of the clash of Tadhg MacCatharigs and St James.
The past week has been extremely busy for the underage players. With games in different codes and age groups and with Sciath na Scoil added in it has been hugely demanding on players and it is only with their interest and their parents support that games get played and the club is grateful for their commitment. The U16 footballers travelled to Enniskeane to play Ahan Gaels on Tuesday 21st April and put in a good effort before losing out 2-9 to 2-7. On Thursday 23rd it was off to Enniskeane to play Ahan Gaels again in U14 football. This was a tight encounter with little between the teams. The Kilmacs looked to have done enough being 3 points ahead with time up. A goal from the penalty spot finished the game which ended a draw Kilmacabea 4 –11 Ahan Gaels 5- 8. Glengarriffe U12 footballers made the long trip to Leap on Monday 27/4/09 for a highly entertaining game. As happens with these games fortunes change dramatically  through the game. In the first half the Kilmacs played with good slick movement and were well in control at half time. After the early exchanges in the second half the game altered completely with Glengarriffe on top. Amid great excitement the Kilmacs managed to come again and just nose home in front. The spirit of the game was a credit to both sides.
There was no jackpot winner in this weeks draw. The numbers were 1,4 and 21. The weekly sellers prize was won by the Beehive. Luclydip prizes went to Peadar and Alexi, Ballincollig; Owen Collins, Kilmacabea and James Sheehy, Glanbrack. Next weeks draw will be in Shanahans' for a jackpot of E3,000.

The second junior football squad had their first game of the season when they were hosts to their St. James’s counterparts in perfect conditions on Saturday evening last. Youthful Timothy Nyhan, with five points from play, must have enhanced his prospects of consideration for the first team. Noel McCarthy’s first half goal and point did his prospects no harm. Substitute Paul Tobin had two similar scores in the second half. Veteran Noel Crowley notched up four points (three frees). Adrian O Driscoll and Andrew O Callaghan also got on the score sheet. Unfortunately Andrew unwisely got in the referee’s ‘’ bad books’’ late in the game, which probably rules him out of consideration for promotion, for the present at least. Final score Kilmacabea 2-14, St. James’s 2-7.

        Weekly Notes 19 April 2009

The junior footballers had a surprisingly easy victory in section 1 of the league when they met a very much under strength Tadhg MacCathraigs in Aughaville on Tuesday evening last. A penalty for a technical infringement in the square was converted by Ger O Donovan in the tenth minute and eight minutes later Joseph Collins  rattled the net when he latched on to an effort for a point which dropped short. The half time score 2-5 to 0-3 was not a very accurate reflection of the relative work rate of the two teams. When Donie O Donovan chipped the goalkeeper for a third Kilmacs goal six minutes into the second half the contest was effectively over. For the remainder of the game the visitors scored six further points to two for the home side.
Mizen were the visitors to Leap on Saturday morning 11th April for a highly exciting and entertaining game in the U-12 football league. This game that flowed from end to end with great excitement throughout. With Mizen goaling on the restart after going in ahead it looked as if they may  get the upper hand but it was the Kilmacs who came strongest in the latter part of the game to fashion the win in a high scoring game.
The U14 footballers travelled to Ballinascarthy  on Thursday 9th April 2009 but proved to be much too strong for the home team and the game was over as a contest long before the end. The U16 hurlers started their league with a home game against Skibbereen on Sunday 19th. With little done there was a lot of rusty touches but the game was a extremely competitive game with nothing between the sides. The Kilmacs managed to come out on the right side on the score line 2-4 to 1-5. Team Liam Thompson, Liam O’Driscoll, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan, Stephen Crowley, Martin Collins, Liam Cahalane, Finnán Tobin, Denny Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, David O’Donovan, Eoin Collins, Oisin O’Sullivan.

Michael Nyhan, Gortroe was the first prize winner in our monthly club draw. Donie Hurley, Maulagow, Drinagh won the second and third went to Dan Connolly, Keelnacally. Consolation prizes were won by Anthony O Regan, Spur Hill, Cork; Mary French, Killinga; Donal O Donoghue, Maulatrahane and Kevin & Aileen O Brien, formerly Gortnadihy.

          Weekly Notes 12 April 2009

The U-12 footballers began their season with a league game against Oliver Plunketts in Ahiohill on Sunday 29th March. On a cold day it proved to be a sharp introduction for this relatively inexperienced group. Early on it took them a while to settle to the openness of the game and Oliver Plunketts had the upper hand especially on the scoreboard and were up at half time. As the game progressed the Kilmacs settled and managed to get the encouragement of a winning start. While there were some obvious leaders it was a result based on the effort of all players. Team John Patrick Sheehan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Timmie O’Donovan, Darren Whooley, Ciarán French, Sean French, Matthew O’Neill, Eoin O’Sullivan, Iona Tobin, Shane Collins, Damian Gore, Ross Cantwell, Karl Ronan, Mark Wilson, Rachel O’Callaghan, Julie Anne Williamson, Andrew O’Donovan.
The U14 footballers started their league campaign with a comprehensive victory over Timoleague in Leap on Thursday 2nd April 2009. While Timoleague had a number of good players the overall strength of the Kilmacs meant that this was never a contest.

          Weekly Notes 22 March 2009

Kilmacabea started brightly in their U21 Football Championship game against neighbouring O Donovan Rossas in Castlehaven last Saturday. They dominated the opening 20 minutes, to lead 0-4 to 0-2, all scores from play. A penalty award of a rather technical nature duly converted by Rossas lifted their game and they scored 4 points (2 frees) and held Kilmacs scoreless for the remainder of the half, leaving the interval score 1-6 to 0-4 in the Skibb. men’s favour.
A John O Driscoll goal early in the second period lifted Kilmac hopes, reducing the arrears to a more manageable two points. However they found themselves unable to build on this boost despite having their share of the play. A couple of missed frees didn’t help their cause. Rossas added three points from play to restore their 5 point lead. Goalkeeper Colin McCarthy came out to drive over a free from the 45 and the Kilmac mentors gambled on replacing him in goal where he had an excellent game and bringing him to centerfield and moving Joseph Collins in to the edge of the square where he rewarded them with another goal, reducing the margin to the minimum. It was now all Kilmacs but a couple of expert saves from Rossas keeper kept them in front and with time up they broke forward again and tapped over the insurance point. Final score O Donovan Rossas 1-10; Kilmacabea 2-5.
Despite the disappointment of defeat Kilmacabea justified their decision to move up to this grade. They dominated centerfield for much of the hour where Kevin O Sullivan had a particularly fine game. Their inexperience in playing at higher grades up through the age levels was probably their main shortcoming. It was noticeable that their opponents were better at creating the extra man when they broke forward and more easily turned chances into scores. The game which was played in ideal conditions was a very sporting affair.
Ballydehob on Easter Saturday is pencilled in for our junior football championship meeting with old friends Muintir Mhaire.

          Weekly Notes 15 March 2009

Kilmacabea were hosts to St. Mary’s last Saturday in their second game of the junior football league. Both teams had won their first game in the competition. Conditions were not pleasant, a greasy sod, a fairly stiff cross wind and a steady drizzle for most of the game. It was no surprise that both defences were on top. Kilmacs had a point and a well taken goal, following a good build-up before the visitors opened their account with a pointed free in the 16th minute. They added one from play before a slightly fortuitous goal gave them the lead in the 27th minute. A point from play for Kilmacabea left it all to play for 1-2 each at half time.
If both sets of forwards found the fist half frustrating, most of the second half was even less rewarding for them. Neither side could be faulted for their level of commitment even though they had added only one point each with five minutes left to play. Could somebody sneak a winner or would they have to settle for a share of the spoils? However Kilmacs finally prized open tight defence of the Ballineen/Enniskeane men to score two goals and two points in the final minutes. The final score 3-5 to 1-3 looked rather flattering for the home side.
The U 16 footballers started their campaign with a fruitful game against Kilmeen in Leap on Sunday 8th March. In bitter conditions with some very wintry showers it turned into an even contest. Conceding a soft goal at the start and with a young team it looked as if it would be a struggle but the Kilmacs responded and the first half was even with the score at half time Kilmeen 4 – 3 to Kilmacabea 3 – 4. The Kilmacs settled for the second half and had the edge to go on and win on the score 5 – 9 to 5 – 3.
On Saturday 7th the Finals of the Fr. Crowley cup was played. While conditions were not pleasant it did not dent the enthusiasm of all involved and provided great excitement. The team of Richie O’Sullivan(Droum) won out over the team of his cousin Fiona O’Sullivan(Mealisheen) in a closely contested final. The cup was presented to the winning captain by the sponsor of the cup Fr. Michael Crowley. This competition continues to introduce players to the game since it started in 1972.

The results of the club draw for March were as follows; Audrey O Brien, c/o O Briens, Gortnadihy E500; Ann Hegarty & Eileen Bohane, c/o Skibbereen Hospital E200; Virgie O Callaghan, Maulatrahane E100 and E50 each Michael Tobin, Keamore; Tommy Salter, Cullinagh; Karl McCarthy, Glandore and Eileen O Donovan, Droum House.

        Weekly Notes 8 March 2009

On Sunday 1st March Kilmacabea Junior Footballers opened the new playing season with an away game against Muintirvara. Conditions were very good. The only significant factor was the strong late afternoon sun into the eyes of the team defending the dressingroom end.  The home team had to cope with this in the first half. Fielding a relatively young team with this advantage Kilmacs had three early points from play. On the tenth minute Muintir struck for a well taken goal to open their account, adding a point to take the lead before the end of the first quarter. However the remainder of the period was dominated by the visitors who scored 5 points (2 frees) to Muintir's 1 point (free).
Turning to face their physicaly stronger opponents and the slanting sun, was the 3 point lead sufficient cushion for Kilmacs. This became 4 before the western men had 3 unanswered points, one from a sideline to reduce the lead to the minimum by the end of the third quarter. It was clear that more than the league points were at stake in this encounter, with both sides anxious to lay down a marker for their next meeting, which will be the first round of the championship. However as in the first half Kilmacs dominated the last quarter with 4 points (1 free) to Muintir's 1 point. Final score Kilmacabea 0-13; Muintirvara 1-6. While it would be very foolish to read too much into this result it was an encouraging start for Kilmacs.
The Fr Crowley Cup competition was played off on Saturday 28th February and with a fine afternoon was a very enjoyable exercise for all. The finals will be played on this Saturday 7th March at 2pm. Aisling Cahalane’s team will play Euan Tobin’s team first followed by the game between Richie O’Sullivan’s team and Fiona O’Sullivan’s team.

        Weekly Notes 18 January 2009:

Despite the inclement weather training has been underway a number of weeks for the Junior and U21 footballers. The Juniors are meeting Muintirvara in the championship first round. All their meetings in this grade have been close contests. The U21s have moved to A this year, being B champions for the last two years. They have drawn O'Donovan Rossas in the first round, a contest where Kilmacs have definitely nothing to loose.

The results of the Club Draw for February were as follows; First Prize, Donie O Donoghue, Maulatrahane; Second, John an Betty Keohane, Glandore Road; Third, Declan O Donovan, Coornishal; Consolation Prizes, Garvey Family, Killinga, Pat and Claire O Mahony, Mealasheen, Donal O Donoghue (Jnr), Maulatrahane and Ann Leonard.

          Weekly Notes 11 January 2009:

At a very pleasant informal function in The Marine, Glandore, Donal Og Cusack presented our Under 21 and Minor teams with their medals. He had some very appropriate words of encouragement for these young men. How we are learning something new everyday, no matter how long we are involved and stessing especialy the great lasting friendships which are forged by involvement in team sports. He presented our Young Player Trophy for 2008 to Andrew O Callaghan who was prominent in both Minor and Under 21 campaigns. Noel O Donoghue was awarded the Player of The Year Award for his tremendous commitment to the Junior 1 team, despite the year being a very busy one for him off the field. Long serving club treasurer, Pat O Callaghan recieved The Club Person of the Year Plaque. Donal Og then drew the tickets for our local fundraising monthly draw. Our pastor Fr Pat O Sullivan MSC was a very popular  1st prize winner. Adrian Healy, Ballyhilloe won the second prize and 3rd went Joe Cowhig, Leap Service Station. The four consolation prizes went Brendan O Driscoll, Shreelane; John Sweetnam, Killinga; Billy Thompson, Kilmacabea and Noel Collins, formaly Kilmacabea. Gratitude was expressed to our guest Donal Og Cusack for being so generous with his time and to our host Shane O Brien for his generous sponsorship of the event.

          Weekly Notes 04 January 2009:

At the recent AGM the Hon. Sec. John O Sullivan reported a very successful year for the club. The upgraded playing pitch has proved most satisfactory, in a very wet year. Great progress is being made with the building of the new club facilities. The support of the community in funding these developments has been very gratifying. Most of all it was a rewarding year on the playing fields. The U12 footballers won their league. The U14s won league and championship in both football and hurling, unique in the history of the club and rare at any level. The minors got to four football finals but unfortunately were runners up in all of them. They should still be proud of their record for the year. The U21 footballers retained their championship title, serving up some heart warming performances on the way. St Fachtnas Minor Hurlers, a joint venture between Kilmacabea and Carbery Rangers, won their divisional and county championships and got to the county final of their league, a very successful debut.

All outgoing officers were re-elected unopposed and Brian O Donovan (the Quay) was appointed to the new position of Fixtures Secretary. Aidan Glavin stepped down as manager of the second junior team and was replaced by Peadar O Laoighre and Anton Walsh (joint managers). Donie O Donovan took over responsibility for the U21s from Mick O Donovan.

Reserve Saturday night 24th Jan. for a medal presentation ceremony in The Marine, Glandore.
The season continued for the minor footballers when they travelled to take on Inchigeelagh in Inchigeelagh in the semi final of the county league (12 a side) on Sunday 14th December. Missing a number of players, there was no expectations especially as it was always going to be a difficult game. As so often this year, this group showed that with their character and commitment that nothing knocks them. Playing against the wind, hill and strong sun, with conditions underfoot very heavy it looked as if they were going to struggle. Even though Richard Jennings hit the post after 5 minutes the Kilmacs were struggling to get out of their own half and the defence was performing heroics under constant pressure. Inchigeelagh were completely dominant but while they had three points it did not reflect their dominance. After the first quarter the Kilmacs settled and began to play football and they received a break when Padraig French finished off a good move with a goal in the 25th minute. Half time came with the Kilmacs the happier to be ahead 1- 3 to 0-4. For the second half the Kilmacs continued where they left off and were now in control and extended their lead with some fine scores created with good attacking play, so that by the 23rd minute they were 7 points up. Then followed a controversial goal for Inchigeelagh in the 24th minute to give them a lift for the next 5 minutes. Again the Kilmacs defended heroically and even though Inchigeelagh did get another goal in the 30th minute the Kilmac’s responded with another point to give them victory on the score 1-10 to 2-5.   The players cannot be praised enough for their performance, effort and ability and the biggest pity is that they did not have more support to recognise and appreciate their efforts. Team - Padraig Burke, Joseph O’Callaghan, Thomas Jennings, Tom Collins, Stephen Calnan, Padraig McCarthy, Timothy Nyhan, John O’Sullivan(0-4), Colin McCarthy(0-5), Andrew O’Callaghan(0-1), Richard Jennings, Padraig French(1-0), Finnán Tobin.

          Weekly Notes 14 December 2008:

The minor hurlers of St. Fachtna's were in action again on Saturday 6th December 2008 in the County final of the league when they took on Kiltagh Og in Ballincollig. The day was fine, dry and cold with the surface wet and with little grass it meant that the first touch was crucial. Showing no signs that St. Fachtna’s were playing the game without two influential players they had the better of the early exchanges and had the ideal start with a goal from John O’Sullivan in the first minute and were six points up before Kiltagh had their opening score a goal in the eight minute. Kiltagh then went ahead but scores and play were even for the remainder of the half. Kiltagh got crucial scores a goal and a point just before half time to put them ahead at half time on the score of  4-3 to 2-6. In the third quarter Kiltagh had the advantage in the key positions both defensively and in attack and extended their lead. In the last quarter St. Fachtna’s made a brave effort to rescue the game with Sean O’Neill completing his hat trick of goals but the gap was too much to bridge. The final score was Kiltagh 7-6 St. Fachtna’s 4-7. While it was a disappointing end, the team on the day made a superb effort especially given the psychological blow they had been dealt prior to the game and it served to prove that there is ability throughout the team. Hopefully the year will be the spur for even greater achievements in the future. Team Padraig Burke, Mike Walsh, Colin McCarthy, Michael Dineen, Stephen Calnan, Eoin Kelly, Paudie Hodnett(0-5), Paudie Hicks, Timothy Nyhan(0-1), Conor O’Callaghan(0-1), John O’Sullivan(1-0), Sean O’Neill(3-0). Subs used Eoin Lane, Tom Collins, Padraig O’Donovan, Kieran Fitzpatrick.
The local fundraising drive to service the development loan has been a great success. Sincere thanks to everybody who supported it. Fr Pat O Sullivan MSC presided over the first two monthly draws recently. For November the 500 Euro prize went to the Calnan Family, Highfield; 200 Euro to Kester Kelly, Gortnadihy; 100 Euro Chris Walsh, Toughbawn and four consolation prizes of 50 Euro each to Tadhg Hurley, (Kilfadeen); Tim & Bernie Healy, Cullane; May Cahalane; Maulatrahane and Kevin Hourihane, (Kilmacabea). First prize winners in the December draw were Ann Marie, John & Katie O Sullivan, Clounties; 2nd Pat & Mary O Sullivan, Maulagow; 3rd Michael & Ina Gallwey, Clounties and the four consolation prize winners were Denis McCarthy, Bawnfune; John Hourihane, Bandon; May Cahalane, Maulatrahane and Francis Maguire, Gurtyowen. Christmas spot prizes were won by Tony Connolly, Reavouler; Donal O Donovan, Keamnabrica; Michael Donovan, Ballyroe; Declan O Donovan, Coornishal; Patricia Dineen, Brade and Mary O Callaghan, Barleyhill.

          Weekly Notes 07 December 2008:

A day of glory for the hurlers of St Fachtna’s(Kilmacabea & Carbery Rangers) as they captured the County minor “C” hurling title on Saturday 29th November. Played in the fine setting of Pairc Uí Rinn in cold but otherwise ideal conditions little did the early exchanges indicate the way things would go. Bride Rovers started in fine form and looked to be all powerful as they cruised in to a four point lead and looking very dangerous going forward. As the St. Fachtna's defence settled to the task the game levelled out and St Fachtna's started to create attacks of their own and by the thirteenth minute the sides were level on 4 points each. Bride Rovers came again and managed to forge ahead and by the 18th minute were 2 points up on the score 0-8 to 0-6. The game was end to end at this stage but St Fachtna's players were now playing with more freedom and from here to half time they forged into a 3point lead to go in ahead 0-11 to 0-8. Unfortunately just before half time there was a flare up in what was otherwise a game played in a good spirit which resulted in a player from either side being red carded. Coming out for the second half there was a worry what effect this would have on the team but this was soon forgotten in the 1st minute with first John O’Sullivan breaking through for a goal followed immediately by a goal from Sean O’Neill. This was the turning point and from here there was only going to be one winner as St. Fachtna's went on to win comfortably on the score 3-17 to 0-11. Padraig Burke was able in goal and dealt with anything that came his way. Mike Walsh and Colin McCarthy a secure last line of defence with nothing getting past them. Michael Dineen(0-1), Stephen Calnan, and Eoin Kelly were the anchor for the team putting in huge effort especially when needed during the first half. Joe Collins(0-1) drove the team on from midfield. John O’Rourke's(0-12) undoubted skill was clear to all and was the star of the show. Timothy Nyhan got through a huge amount of work to take the load for others. Padraig Hodnett’s powerful running with the ball was unstoppable and opened up the game to set up many attacks. The inside forwards John O’Sullivan(1-1) and Sean O’Neill(2-1) were very dangerous and finished off the good moves to put daylight between the teams. The subs who played Padraig Hicks(0-1), Conor O’Callaghan and Eoin Lane all looked very capable and effective. Tom Collins and Andrew O’Callaghan were also among the subs.  This was a great climax to the effort put in by the team during the year and beyond any dreams when the idea was first proposed. The cup was presented to the captain Stephen Calnan amid scenes of great celebration. This was a historic first county hurling title and hopefully it will give a huge boost to the development of hurling in the area in the future. Well done to all the players involved and to the mentors who worked with them especially T.J. Collins, John Fitzpatrick, Michael Walsh and Johnny O’Sullivan.

          Weekly Notes 16 November 2008:

The minor footballers took on Kilbrittain in the county final on Saturday 15/11/08 in Enniskeane and their outstanding effort deserved a better reward than a one point defeat which was to be the heartbreaking outcome. The day was dry but conditions underfoot were slippery. Playing into the stiff wind in the first half the Kilmacs were slow to settle and were punished by a razor sharp Kilbrittain side who were winning the battles throughout the field. The Kilmacs were rocked by the concession of a goal on the 18th minute and by the 20th minute were eight points down and struggling. Few if any would have given them a chance at this stage and they would have been forgiven for capitulating. As so often with this team their fantastic spirit comes through and so it proved again. With a few positional switches they began to drag themselves back into the game and had reduced the gap at half time to a more manageable 6 points on the score Kilmacabea 0-4 Kilbrittain 1-7. Coming out for the second half they made a truly magnificent effort and hauled the game back with some fine play based on a true team effort. They closed the gap to a single point, missing some glorious goal chances on the way but time ran out on them, losing on the score 0-10 to 1-8. While this was a frustrating and heartbreaking defeat the players should put that behind them and be proud of their outstanding performance on the day and during the year. At the start of the year they had no ambitions of this level and they can feel proud of their achievements and the pleasure they gave to their followers with their undoubted ability. Well done to all involved. Team Padraig Burke, Joseph O’Callaghan, Thomas Jennings, John O’Sullivan, Stephen Calnan, Colman O’Riordan, Joseph Collins, Colin McCarthy(0-6), Timothy Nyhan(0-1), Andrew O’Callaghan(0-2), Richard Jennings(0-1), Padraig McCarthy, Padraig French, Conor O’Callaghan, Tom Collins, Sean O’Regan, Eoin O’Neill.
On Sunday afternoon last Kilmacabea’s second junior football team had home advantage in their 3rd round championship game against Randal Ogs. Conditions were quite good for the time of the year. Two early points from play by experienced full forward Noel Crowley sandwiched a pointed free for Randals, who added a well taken goal after 10 minutes. A few minutes later Paul Tobin, who had a very lively game, beat the visitors’ goalkeeper to fist a dropping ball to the net, restoring Kilmacs lead. Two well taken points by Noel Crowley and Timothy Nyhan stretched the home lead to 3 points. A pointed free by James O Donovan and a like score for Randals, completed the action of an entertaining 1st half.
On resumption Randals quickly had the ball in the net to level the game again. Another point from a free by James O Donovan was cancelled by a Randals free. Timothy Nyhan again edged the home side into the lead with a point from play. Two more points from James (one free) were matched by similar scores from Randals who were now giving everything for the cause, with time running out. Could Kilmacs hold on to their slender lead? A low ball across in front of the goal was deftly controlled on the ground and finished into the corner of the net by Kevin McCarthy, who had come on as a sub for Barry Glavin (injured) before half time. Randals added a point from play, leaving the final score Kilmacabea 2-9, Randal Ogs 2-6.

          Weekly Notes 9 November 2008:

For followers of Kilmacabea the past weekend featured two outstanding displays of passion, skill, commitment and reward for two teams featuring all that is good in the game. First up were the minor footballers who took on Inchigeelagh under lights in Ballydehob on Friday 31/10/08 in the county semi final. The Kilmacs conceded an early goal and while the Kilmacs were under pressure in defence, exchanges were even and the sides were level after 12 minutes. Inchigeelagh proceeded to get a grip on the game and got on top and by the 25th minute had stretched in to a 6 point lead and looked totally in control, dominating throughout the pitch. The introduction of Conor O’Callaghan and some positional switches helped to steady the flow and the Kilmacs managed to close the gap by half time to a more manageable 4 points with the score of Kilmacabea 0-9 Inchigeelagh 2-7. Points were exchanged at the start of the second half but the Kilmacs were now playing with renewed determination and with an almost unreal transformation they took hold of the game and began to close the gap. Scores were hard earned but they got the reward for their effort when they goaled in the 17th minute. The Kilmacs were now dominating and they stretched their lead to 4 points. While Inchigeelagh made a brave effort in extra time it was not enough to break the determination of the Kilmacs who won on the score of 1-16 to 2-9. This group of players deserve the utmost admiration and credit for the manner in which they turned this game around when it appeared that they were being out played throughout the pitch. As long time supporter Tim John O’Donoghue summed it up “They did their parish proud”. Team Padraig Burke, Thomas Jennings, Padraig McCarthy, John O’Sullivan(0-7), Stephen Calnan, Colman O’Riordan, Joseph Collins, Colin McCarthy(0-7), Timothy Nyhan(0-1), Andrew O’Callaghan, Richard Jennings(1-0), Padraig French, Conor O’Callaghan(0-1), Finnán Tobin. The facilities were in top shape and are a credit to the local club’s efforts.
On Sunday morning 2nd November the U12 footballers took on Pedlars in the final of the league in Ardfield. Again the conditions were good and the pitch was in excellent condition. In the first half the Kilmacs played second best to Pedlars who were flying and were on top throughout the pitch. Even though one of the goals was of the soft variety, the Kilmacs could have no complaints going in at half time, 8 points down on the score of Kilmacabea 0-4  Pedlars 2-6. Little did the crowd expect the turnaround that took place after half time and it was as if a different team took to the pitch. Taking over completely, they proceeded to cancel the deficit to the extent that they were 7 points up with minutes to go. While Pedlars did make a nervous finish with 2 goals in the final minutes  the Kilmacs held on for a deserved victory on the score 1-16 to 4-6. Each and everyone of the players can take pride in their performance and the way they played the game and what it meant could be seen in their joy at the end. Team – Matthew O’Neill, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Daniel O’Sullivan, Odhran Connolly, Aishling Cahalane, Euan Tobin(0-1), Martin Collins(0-1), Eoin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-12)(Captain), Kevin Whooley(1-1), Aidan Williamson, Sean French, Damian Gore(0-1), Tiernan Kerrisk, Ciaran French.

          Weekly Notes 2 November 2008:

The minor footballers took on Lisgoold in the quarter final of the County Championship in Lisgoold on Sunday 19th October. The game went ahead in difficult conditions with rain and a strong cross wind on wet ground but these did not greatly affect the game. The home team were fastest out of the blocks and early on looked the more likely team to progress especially when they had a goal in the 5th minute. When the Kilmacs settled they pieced together some good flowing moves which led to goals in the 6th and 14th minute to give them the edge. The second quarter was even with little between the sides and the Kilmacs went in ahead at half time on the score of 2-4 to 1-3. Having had the benefit of the cross wind and the fall this did not look to be enough. The team showed their character in the second half in the way they took control of the game and with some good moves extended their lead with some fine scores. The switch of Andrew O’Callaghan to wing back soon after half time proved a masterstroke as he proceeded to give a class display, cutting off the ball defensively and surging forward in attack. From here to the end the Kilmacs were in control of the game and were deserving winners on the score of 2-14 to 1 – 6. This was a good display with fine performances throughout the pitch. Team Padraig Burke, Joseph O’Callaghan, Thomas Jennings, Padraig McCarthy, Stephen Calnan, Colman O’Riordan, Joseph Collins, Colin McCarthy(1-5), Timothy Nyhan(0-2), Andrew O’Callaghan(0-1), Richard Jennings(0-1), John O’Sullivan(1-5), Padraig French, Finnán Tobin. Thanks go to the home club for the welcome refreshments after the game.
The U14 hurlers travelled to Barryroe to take on the home team in the final of the league on Monday 27th October. The team started brightly and had the better of the early exchanges. The Kilmacs had the advantage but were open to get caught on the break but getting on top towards the end of the half they converted their advantage into scores and went in ahead on the score 2-6 to 2-2. The second half was more even with the home team having the slight advantage, understandable as the game was now being played under lights. The Kilmacs worked hard and were worthy winners on the score of 3-8 to 4-3 to add the league title to the championship. This was a good team effort with a number of fine individual displays especially Eamon O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane, Niall Hayes. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam O’Driscoll, Oisin O’Sullivan, Stephen Crowley, Eamon O’Sullivan(2-3), Richie O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane(0-1), Martin Collins(0-2), Declan O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes(1-1), Denny Hayes, David O’Donovan, Liam Thompson(0-1), Odrahan Connolly, Shane O’Neill.
The club would like to express sympathy to the O’Callaghan family Maultrahane on the death of their aunt/grand aunt Lena O’Sullivan.

          Weekly Notes 26 October 2008:

On Friday night last the club played its first game in the revamped Junior 2 Football Championship, when we took on St. Colums under lights in Aughaville. Despite the prevailing weather, conditions were reasonably good on the night. Two well taken goals in the first half gave Kilmacs a bit of a cushion, the first by the experienced Noel Crowley and the second from the boot of Paul Tobin. Some good long range points from a very committed Colums side kept them in touch. In the second half Colums seemed to be determined to get a goal by whatever means and got themselves into the referee’s bad books. Had they concentrated on their point scoring ability they may well have reeled in Kilmacabea. The final score was Kilmacs 2-6, Colums 0-8. The winners go into round 3, while the losers must win a play off to advance.

          Weekly Notes 19 October 2008:

The combination of Kilmacabea and Carbery Rangers hurlers as St Fachtnas were in action on Sunday 12/10/08 when they took on Lisgoold in the County minor semi final in Rosscarbery. On a dry day in ideal conditions this was a excellent display of hurling played in a positive fashion with plenty to admire. St Fachtnas settled quickly and flashed over 2 quick points and looked bright. As Lisgoold settled they looked the sharper and by midway through the half were 6 points up. Positional switches in the St. Fachtnas defence helped settle things and they struck back. The pace of Paudie Hodnett, John O’Rourke and John O’Sullivan caused the Lisgoold defence problems as each grabbed a goal to allow the teams in at the break with St. Fachtnas ahead on the score 3-7 to 2-6. Lisgoold started the second half in determined fashion and quickly reeled in the deficit, with some good points from good moves. When Lisgoold goaled after 10 minutes to put them 3 points up and starting to get on top, it looked as if they would push on at that stage. Instead some substitutions by St. Fachtnas helped to steady the flow and when a effort by one of the subs Conor O’Callaghan deceived the Lisgoold keeper for a goal it helped St. Fachtnas to raise their game again. As the game opened up they were able to use their pace and stamina to close out the game and tacking on the scores were able to push on for a deserved victory on the score 5- 17 to 3 –12. Team Padraig Burke, Colin McCarthy(0-1), Mike Walsh, Mike Dineen, Stephen Calnan, Eoin Kelly, Joseph Collins(0-2), Timothy Nyhan(0-1), John O’Rourke(1-9), Paudie Hodnett(1-2), John O’Sullivan(2-1), Sean O’Neill. Subs Padraig Hicks, Conor O’Callaghan(1-1), Andrew O’Callaghan.

          Weekly Notes 21 September 2008:

The minor footballers played Muintir Bhaire in the  semi final of the championship in Goleen on Saturday 13th September. The Kilmacs started well and playing fluent football and combining well  had the better of exchanges and were ahead at half time on the score 1-8 to 0-3. The second half was a much tighter affair and a good test for the team with a determined effort by Muintir Bhaire. Under pressure the Kilmacs defended well and broke effectively to hold their advantage and held on to win on the score 1- 16 to 2-6. A feature of the game was the quality of point scoring by Colin McCarthy but the result was based on a team performance. Team Padraig Burke, Joseph O’Callaghan, Thomas Jennings, Colman O’Riordan, Stephen Calnan, Tom Collins, Joseph Collins, Sean O’Regan, Andrew O’Callaghan(0-1), Colin McCarthy(0-11), Richard Jennings(1-2), Tim Nyhan(0-2), Padraig McCarthy, Finnán Tobin.
The U12 footballers played Clanna Gael in Leap on Friday  12th September. Even though they hadn’t played for a while they started brightly and put in a good effort. The second half was even and the team were made to work but were winners on the score 1-12 to 0-5. A feature of this game was a string of fine saves made by Matthew O’Neill in the goal to keep the goal intact. Team – Matthew O’Neill, Shane O’Neill, Bernadette O’Driscoll, Daniel O’Sullivan, Odhran Connolly, Aishling Cahalane, Euan Tobin(0-1), Martin Collins(0-1), Eoin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-7), Johnaton O’Regan, Kevin Whooley(1-3), Aidan Williamson, Darren Whooley, Sean French, Damian Gore, Tiernan Kerrisk, Ciaran French, Iona Tobin.

          Weekly Notes 14 September 2008:

The combination of Kilmacabea and Carbery Rangers  as St Fachtnas may not have been a marriage made in heaven but it has certainly proved a successful union after contesting the West Cork minor hurling final against St. James at Ahiohill on Sunday 7th September. The early exchanges were even with scores being exchanged and there was little between the sides. Towards the end of the first half St. Fachtnas were able to use their physical advantage and with some good use of the ball and space were able to create openings and with 3 chances being converted into goals they had a firm grip of the game at half time on the score 3 –10 to 0 –7. St. James made a determined effort in the second half and did close the gap  but St. Fachtnas always had enough in reserve to hold out for a historic victory on the score 4-16 to 2-16. All the players showed that they have listened to their mentors in developing the skills of the game. Padraig Burke was very reliable in goal. Colin McCarthy and Mike Walsh were a good last line of defence and were impenetrable all through. The half line of Eoin Kelly, Stephen Calnan and Paudie Hodnett were very strong with some great surging runs to set up attacks. Joseph Collins(0-3) got through a huge amount of work around the middle. Timothy Nyhan(1-0) used his size to advantage and he had two very able and skilful wing men in Conor O’Callaghan(0-1) and Sean O’Neill(0-1). The inside line were lethal with two very good finishers in John O’Sullivan(1-4) and John O’Rourke(1-6) who showed all his  ability when he moved out the field. Subs used from a plentiful supply were Padraig Donovan(of Maultrahane stock), Kieran Fitzpatrick, Padraig Hicks(1-1) vital scores, Andrew O’Callaghan and Michael Dineen. Well done to the mentors T.J. Collins and John Fitzpatrick for harnessing the resources to a cohesive unit.
The U12 hurlers were in action on Friday night 5th September when they played Timoleague in the
West Cork semi-final. They put in a great effort but unfortunately were not able to get the scores to reflect when they were on top and were ultimately undone by a goal from a long range free. The final score was Kilmacabea 0-8 Timoleague 1-6. Team Kevin Whooley, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Tiernan Kerrisk, Odhran Connolly, Euan Tobin, Matthew O’Neill, Martin Collins, Aidan Williamson, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Ciaran French, Ellis Wilson, Eoin O’Sullivan, Shane Garvey.

          Weekly Notes 07 September 2008:

Sport like life, is full of moments of great joy and moments of great sadness and so it proved for the U14 footballers who played Passage in the County semi-final in Kilbrittain on Friday 29th August. The evening was dry while the under foot conditions were soft. Taking to the pitch, the task facing the Kilmacs was obvious in the difference in the physical presence of the teams. Not letting this affect them the Kilmacs were playing well and giving a good account of themselves and the sides were level after the first quarter. Towards the end of the first half Passage got on top around the middle of the field and scored goals in the 20th and 28th minutes. The Kilmacs were dealt a huge body blow in the 29th minute when a loose kick out went to an unmarked Passage player who promptly scored another goal. The Kilmacs looked to be in trouble going in at half time 8 points behind on the score Kilmacabea 1- 3 Passage 3-5 and struggling in a number of key positions. This team showed their true worth coming out after the whistle when they put their set backs behind them and proceeded to dominate the second half. With great courage each player gave his all and the team got on top. The only place this was not reflected was on the scoreboard with a number of chances going begging. Amid great excitement they proceeded to slowly close the gap, to the point that by the 28th minute they were a point up and Passage had been limited to two points in that period. The Kilmacs continued to press but were not able to extend their advantage and were caught for a breakaway point in the 31st minute. With both sides now pressing for the winning score it was Passage who got the point to give them victory in the 34th minute. This was a heartbreaking way for a team to lose especially after the outstanding effort in the second half. While the result will show they lost this game, they can take great pride in the effort they put in and the skill they showed in playing the game in the manner that it should be played. They gave great pleasure during the campaign and they lost no respect in this game. They can hold their heads up with pride and if they continue to show this attitude they have a bright future.  The Team: Denny Hayes, Niall Hayes, Fiona O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan, Liam O’Driscoll, Euan Tobin, Eamon O’Sullivan(1-0), Liam Cahalane(1-2), Martin Collins, Liam Thompson, Richie O’Sullivan(0-1), Oisin O’Sullivan(1-0), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-5), David O’Donovan, Eoin Collins, Emma O’Callaghan, Thomas French, Kevin O’Donovan, Jonathon O’Regan, Aishling Cahalane.
The club would like to express sympathy to Oisin O’Sullivan on the death of his grand father Paddy O’Sullivan, Gurteenaduige during the week.
The U 12 hurlers were in championship action on Monday 1st September when they had a victory over Gabriel Og in Skibbereen.

          Weekly Notes 31 August 2008:
The Junior Football championship semi final against champions Bandon, was played in Rosscarbery in perfect conditions
last Friday evening. Kilmacabea started very well with three early points but were rocked by a three goal blitz to leave
them trailing by nine points. However they steadied the ship with three good points before half time to reduce the margin
to a more manageable but still daunting six. On resumption substitute John C. Keohane recently returned to the panel was
called on to help the forward division allowing captain Diarmuid O Donovan drop back into his more familiar defensive role
and Kilmacs began to dominate the exchanges. Gradually the deficit was reduced to four points. John C. knocked in a goal
and it was anyone’s game. A well taken point levelled it. But champions don’t surrender easily and Bandon using their
superior physical strength and greater experience of the big-time damped the Kilmacabea momentum and reclaimed the lead
with a point and with time running out they cut through for a fourth goal to make sure of their place in the final. Kilmacs were
left wondering what they have to do to break through, what for them has become something of a glass ceiling, of the
semi final. What they have to do of course is keep up the good work because a lot of good work has been done by all
concerned. The complete panel of players, the officers and especially the team manager Dan Hourihane and his fellow
selectors Kevin McCarthy and John O Sullivan can be very proud of their efforts.

          Weekly Notes 24 August 2008:

The U14 footballers made the long trip to Rathcormac to play the Home team Bride Rovers in the county quarter final. Despite the heavy weather in the days before the day was dry and the pitch in perfect condition. There was a strong wind and thankfully the Kilmac had the advantage in the first half. Getting down tho business straight from the off they were further boosted when Liam Thomp-son scored a goal in the first minute. With Niall hayes and Eamon O’Sullivan on top at midfield and driving the team forward the Kilmacs pressed home their advantage. The attack was moving and passing to affect and creating chances. Liam Thompson as target man was on fire and took some excellent scores. After the initial burst Bride Rovers did create some opportunities of their own but the defence were covering trhe space and keeping a tight rein. The Kilmacs were using there skill to continue to create and take chances and were well satisfied at half time to be ahead on the score of  2-11 to 1-0. With the change around as expected Bride Rovers did have mor chances in a attacking area of the field and it looked like they could make life difficult when they cut through in the first minute to score a goal. The Kilmacs had rearrange there team and they settled to the task and for the next 15 minutes the game was up and down the field with no score for either side. Bride Rovers were having to win possession where it wass not dangerous and made to work very hard so theat the final ball was given under pressure and Niall Hayes who was now at full back was picking up a huge amount of ball coming out of defence. With all the defence again getting on top in their positions the team picked up the play and when the Kilmacs pushed on mid way through the half the game was now over as a contest.   This wa s asuperb team performance. The work rate from every one was outstanding and the movement and use of possession was first class. Bride Rovers had some fine performers themselves including a excellent goal keeper but the team could not match the balance or intensity of the Kilmacs The Team: Denny Hayes, Liam Cahalane(0-2), Fiona O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan, Liam O’Driscoll, Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan(0-1), David O’Donovan, Martin Collins(1-2), Richie O’Sullivan(0-1), Diarmaid O’Callaghan(1-4), Liam Thompson(2-5), Emma O’Callaghan, Thomas French, Kevin O’Donovan, Jonathon O’Regan, Aishling Cahalane.

            Weekly Notes 17 August 2008:

After much uncertainty the West Cork U-14 championship final went ahead on Saturday 9th August in Skibbereen when the Kilmacs took on Ilen Rovers. This was a test of endurance as well as skill as the game started in a downpour which proceeded to get worse. But while conditions were extremely testing, it did not affect the standard of football played, which was top drawer. It seemed to be tougher for the spectators than the players who did not let it affect the play. The Kilmacs started with the advantage of the wind and were well on top possession wise. However, despite their dominance they were finding scores hard to come by. They got the lift needed when Liam Thompson scored a goal from a free kick in the 6th minute and from here they pushed on. With all the team working for each other they were dominant throughout the pitch. Ilen were a skilful side, were making attacks and did create some opportunities of their own, but the Kilmacs defence was tight and coping well. Going in at half time the Kilmacs were ahead on the score of 4-5 to 1- 2.
Kilmacs started the second half as the first and but for a number of top class saves by the Ilen goalie could have stretched their lead further. The game continued as a contest and while the Kilmacs had a clear lead the Ilen were creating opportunities of their own to give their supporters some cheer. At the final whistle the Kilmacs were the winners on the score 5- 10 to 3-6 to add the football title to the hurling title won by this group in July and to celebrate a historic first double for the club. This was a powerful team performance with every player playing their part. The defence was sound and resolute, midfield dominated possession and the attack worked hard for each other and linked excellently to create their scores. The cup was presented to the joint captains Liam Cahalane and Denny Hayes by the chairman of Bord na nOg Mr Aidan O’Rourke. Thanks to Ilen Rovers for a sporting contest. Thanks to the referee Pat Fitzgerald for a job well done in difficult conditions and the O’Donovan Rossa club officials for braving the conditions. Well done to those who have worked with this group including William Williamson, Karl McCarthy, May Cahalane, Tom Hayes and John Keohane. The Team: Denny Hayes, Liam O’Driscoll, Fiona O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Sullivan(2-0), Euan Tobin, Niall Hayes(2-0), Liam Cahalane, Oisin O’Sullivan(0-2), Liam Thompson(1-1), Richie O’Sullivan(0-2), Martin Collins, Diarmaid O’Callaghan(0-5), David O’Donovan Eoin Collins, Emma O’Callaghan, Thomas French, Kevin O’Donovan, Jonathon O’Regan, Aishling Cahalane.
The minor hurlers St. Fachtnas took on Bantry in the first round of the championship and while they were a bit rusty were too strong on the night and won on the score 4-13 to 4-3.

            Weekly Notes 10 August 2008:

Those who were in Dunmanway on Friday 1st August saw an excellent game of football in the U14 football championship semi final against Kilmeen. This was a tight game with little between the teams. In the first half Kilmacabea played against a strong wind and into the sunshine. While possession was even, Kilmeen looked the stronger and more likely team and were creating the better chances, but some excellent cover defending from Liam O’Driscoll with help from Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Fiona O’Sullivan and David O’Donovan enabled the Kilmacs to hold out. Even though Kilmeen did goal just before halftime the Kilmacs could have no complaints with the half time score line of 0-1 to 1-2 in favour of Kilmeen. The Kilmacs listened to the words of their mentors and there was with a much greater sense of purpose in their second half play. The players had upped their game and were starting to take control. With great excitement scores were  being exchanged and the gap closed. Denny Hayes in goal made some vital saves throughout the game to prevent goals but especially just after half time. With a few key positional switches the team took on a more balanced look and this superiority was reflected by two quick goals mid way through the half and this gave the team the grasp on the game to push on and win on the score of 2-9 to 1-5. This was a fine team performance with all players doing their bit throughout the game. Liam Cahalane, Niall Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan and Martin Collins got through the work and showed their ability and Liam Thompson was superb in leading the forwards where Richie O’Sullivan, Oisin O’Sullivan and Declan O’Sullivan combined to effect. Euan Tobin won vital ball after coming on in the second half. Team: Denny Hayes, David O’Donovan, Liam O’Driscoll, Fiona O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Niall Hayes, Martin Collins, Oisin O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Richie O’Sullivan, Liam Thompson, Declan O’Sullivan, Euan Tobin, Eoin Collins, Emma O’Callaghan, Thomas French, Kevin O’Donovan, Jonathon O’Regan. The U14’s had beaten Timoleague in an earlier round of the championship on 29th July. The U 12 hurlers made the long trip to Ballincollig in the league on Saturday 2nd August. This was a good tight encounter and they were glad to earn victory on the score 4-9 to 4-7.
            Weekly Notes 03 August 2008:

In Kilmacabea’s last two junior football games the main talking point was how lucky they were to be still in the championship. In last Saturday evenings replay against Gabriel Rangers it was their tremendous work rate coupled with some good football which saw them through. Again a very lively start was not reflected on the scoreboard. Good defence on both sides kept the score down to one point each into the second quarter. Tom Sheahan who was having a good game at centre field had to come off injured. His youthful partner in the centre Kevin O Sullivan rose to the occasion with some great fielding, ably assisted by substitute Noel McCarthy. Half time saw Kilmacs ahead at 0-4 to 0-2.
The second half was tit for tat with Kilmacs holding on to their slender lead. As the time ticked away could they hold out or was there a goal in Gabriels? Their corner forwards especially looked threatening when in possession but were being well policed by Sam O Driscoll and Micheal Donovan. Veteran Aidan Glavin was asked to make way for the reintroduction of somewhat recovered Tom Sheahan who moved in around the edge of the square and Kilmacs slipped into a higher gear. The lead was stretched to three points. Then a long ball in was fielded by Tom and quickly crossed by Donncha McCarthy to John O Driscoll who flicked it into the net. Two more points were added in quick succession making the gap eight points. The Western men had the final act in the drama in injury time with an opportunist goal, amid some confusion as to whether it was from play or a quick free, leaving the full time score 1-10 to 1-5, a more accurate reflection of the overall game. So Kilmacabea have again reached their high-water mark of a semi-final place for the third time in four years.

          Weekly Notes 27 July 2008:

If Kilmacs were lucky to win the week before, they were lucky to draw in last Sundays Junior Football Championship game against Gabriel Rangers, which was played in O Donovan Rossa Park, in the heat of early afternoon. Despite a very lively start, they had only two points on the board at the end of the first quarter. Gabriels playing more direct football dominated most of the remainder of the first half scoring four points from play and putting two frees over. As we moved into time added on Kilmacabea snatched two very valuable points, one from a free, to retire just two minor scores down.
The western men opened the second half with another point from play. For the remainder of the third quarter five points were scored from placed balls, one for Gabriels and four for Kilmacs all by John O Driscoll including one from a penalty rebound which had rocketed back off the crossbar. With the sides now deadlocked, the scene was set for an exciting last quarter, another point each from play, could anybody break the deadlock? With a couple of minutes left Gabriels went one clear again. Kilmacs saw two chances to equalise drift just wide. Then in injury time substitute defender Diarmaid O Donovan cut through and coolly slotted over, but the drama wasn’t over. Gabriels were denied a winner by the upright so these two teams who have already met in the first round must meet again to decide who fills the coveted fourth slot in the semi-finals.

          Weekly Notes 20 July 2008:

All the nervous tension of a local derby, a shaky start, a good second half, the agony and the ecstasy of two late goals was the story of Kilmacs third round junior A football championship match against Carbery Rangers second team. It was played in Castlehaven on Saturday evening last in almost perfect conditions. The Ross men playing with the breeze and the strong sun had three points on the board after five minutes. Daniel O Donovan, on whose young shoulders so much of Kilmacabea hopes rested, was in trouble with an old injury and had to come off. He was replaced by Aidan Glavin who went on to have a good game. We were into the second quarter before Kilmac’s opening score, a point from Donncha McCarthy. Two more points before the interval were matched by two Rangers points. Two pointed frees from the unerring boot of Maurice Moore were the difference at half time           Two early points by Kilmacs on resumption, levelled the game A great long range free by Karl McCarthy had them in the lead for the first time. By the 20th minute, they were up three and looking hopeful. By the 25th it was back to two and worrying. On 29th minute Rangers were in for another point to bring margin down to the minimum, but to their supporters delight the ball was chipped into the top corner of the net. Kilmacabea’s worst nightmares were back to haunt them, a last minute goal putting them out of the championship by a point. Was there time for one more attack to level it? The ball was worked up the field. A player was fouled on the sideline 40 meters out. Karl stepped up to take it. He had put one over from the other side earlier. It was on target. Had it the distance? The umpire reached for the flag. We could scarcely believe our eyes. It was green!!!. “Lady Luck” had moved west of the Rowry River. In truth she deserved “man” of the match.
The U16 hurlers were in championship action on Friday evening when they took on Newcestown in Rossmore on Friday 11th July. The team put in a good effort but had to concede victory to a stronger team on the night. With a limited number of players it was always going to be difficult stepping up to thirteen a side. Ardfield were the visitors to Leap on Saturday morning for a  U10 hurling match. While the visitors had some excellent hurlers it was a good experience for all involved. Team Ellis Wilson, Jamie O’Donoghue, Luke Reed, Tiernan Kerrisk, Oran  Kerrisk, Ciarán French, Myles Tobin, Dylan Morgan, Karl Ronan, Dara Tobin, Christy Wilson.

          Weekly Notes 13 July 2008:

The great achievements of the minor non exam league team ended in disappointment when they played Kinsale in the final in Ahiohill on Monday 7th July. Having already played Kinsale in the group stage the Kilmacs knew they were always up against it. With Kinsale playing two grades above them and with a much larger panel they were always going to have strength in depth. From the start it was clear that it was going to be a struggle and even though the Kilmacs got the first score they were never playing with the same fluency of earlier games. The greater strength and balance of Kinsale meant they made the early running and got the upper hand. Individually at different stages all the Kilmac players had their moments but the team was never given the opportunity to put their stamp on the game. To their credit they kept going to the end but it was one of those nights when things did not come off as could be seen in their wides tally eleven against two. While the players will be dissapointed with the display on the night, they should not let that cloud what they have achieved in the competition and in the games played  to reach that stage. With a limited number of players and half of those under 16, they can all hold their heads high and look forward. Congratulations to Kinsale on their win. It was ironic that the captain of the Kinsale team was Michael Scully whose father, Michael is from Glandore and was a great servant of Kilmacabea in days gone by.  Team Padraig Burke, Thomas Jennings, Joseph O’Callaghan, Sean O’Regan, Stephen Calnan, Colman O’Riordan, Joseph Collins, John O’Sullivan(0-3), Colin McCarthy(1-3), Andrew O’Callaghan(1-0), Timothy Nyhan, Richard Jennings, Padraig McCarthy.

          Weekly Notes 06 July 2008:

The U12 hurlers made the long trip to play Dripsey on Monday 30th June. Early on it looked as if things mightn’t go their way but with everyone getting stuck in and working hard they eventually began to come in to the game. Exchanges continued evenly with little between the teams until  the second half when the Kilmacs got the scores to give them the advantage. It was a good exercise for all players and thanks to the parents who travelled and supported. Team Kevin Whooley, Shane O’ Neill, Darren Whooley, Aidan Williamson, Odhran Connolly, Tiernan Kerrrisk, Martin Collins, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Iona Tobin, Euan Tobin, Matthew O’Neill, Aishling Cahalane, D.J. Glanton. The U10/8 footballers were also busy playing Skibbereen and Timoleague during the week as part of their learning experience in playing the game.

          Weekly Notes 29 June 2008:

Ilen Rovers were the visitors to Leap on Sunday 22nd June to play the semi final of the minor non exam league. This was expected to be a difficult assignment and so it proved. From the start it was obvious that the Ilen were a talented team and dominating possession early on it looked as if the visitors would prevail. The Kilmacs did look dangerous when they moved the ball in to the inside line. When Ilen goaled after 13minutes it could have served as the breaking point but this Kilmac team kept working hard and got the break they needed when they goaled soon after. From here to the break they were the dominant team and could have gone in 4 points ahead but Ilen goaled just on half time, with the half time score 1-9 to 2-5 in favour of Kilmac. On the turnaround it was the Ilen who again were on top for the third quarter and scored a series of fine points to go 4 points ahead . Again the Kilmacs got the break they needed when Joseph Collins goaled on the 16th minute. From here to the whistle it was end to end with great excitement and fine football. The Kilmacs got their reward when Richard Jennings goaled in the last minute to give them victory on the score 3 –
14 to 2-15 after a fine game. This was a victory for team effort with each and every player outstanding. The display was typified by the Jennings brothers Richard and Thomas who played in opposite corners of the pitch. Though slight in stature they showed that there is no substitute for skill. Team Padraig Burke, Thomas Jennings, Joseph O’Callaghan, Sean O’Regan, Stephen Calnan, Colman O’Riordan, Joseph Collins(1-0), John O’Sullivan(0-4), Colin McCarthy(0-5), Andrew O’Callaghan, Timothy Nyhan(0-3),.Richard Jennings(2-2), Finnán Tobin. Congratulations also to team mentor Sean Tobin and his wife Kay on the recent birth of their daughter Orla May.

Daniel O’Donovan and Donnacha McCarthy were part of the Carbery Senior football team that played Clonakilty on Saturday 21st June in Castlehaven.
There was further good news for the club on Tuesday evening 24th June when the U14 hurlers played St Colms in the final of  the championship in Dunmanway. Making light of  difficult weather conditions the team took the game to their opponents from the off and were ahead after the first quarter. Colms came back into it for the second quarter with some fine long range free taking and the score was 3-3 to 1-6 in favour of the Kilmacs at halftime. Raising their game after halt time the Kilmacs went on to dominate the second half even if they didn’t reflect it on the score board and were winners on the score 4-7 to 2-6. All the players can feel proud of their contributions to a fine team effort but especially prominent were Niall Hayes, Liam Cahalane, Liam Thompson, Martin Collins, Richie O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan and Oisin O’Sullivan. The outstanding individual player, who was everywhere and superb in everything he did, was captain Eamon O’Sullivan who was presented  with the Fintan O’Callaghan Memorial cup by Fintan’s parents. Team Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam O’Driscoll, Oisin O’Sullivan, Stephen Crowley, Eamon O’Sullivan, Richie O’Sullivan, Martin Collins(0-4), Liam Cahalane(0-1), Declan O’Sullivan(1-0), Niall Hayes(0-2), Liam Thompson(1-0), Denny Hayes(1-0), Eoin Collins, David O’Donovan(1-0), Kevin O’Donovan, Odhran Connolly, Emma O’Callaghan, Matthew O’Neill, Jonathon O’Regan. Well done to all who worked with the preparation of the team.

          Weekly Notes 22 June 2008:

The minors have had a busy few days. On Friday 13th June they travelled to Kilmichael to play Uibh Laoire in the non exam league and came away with a victory. On Sunday morning they were in action again and despite absences due to holidays were able to put in a fine performance to beat Ballinascarthy on the score of 4-10 to 2-9.  They were in action again on Tuesday night when they travelled to play Kilmichael. In poor conditions, that made football difficult they battled hard but had to give second best. Despite losing, results meant that they have qualified for the semi-final. This group have shown great skill and adaptability and are proof that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The U14 hurlers played Barryroe in the semi-final of the championship in Rossmore on Friday 13th. Getting an early goal was crucial as Barryroe looked the better team in the first half. The Kilmacs kept battling and the sides went in at half time level on the score 1-2 to 0-5. Even though Barryroe went ahead early in the second half a few positional switches and a stepping up of performance meant the Kilmacs were worthy winners on the score of 1-8 to 0-7. The U 10  hurlers travelled to play Timoleague on Saturday 14th June. Timoleague were a much more advanced hurling team so it was a tough morning but hopefully it will give them the incentive to work at the skills. Congratulations to Fiona O’Sullivan, Mealisheen  and
Maultrahane National School who was part of the Cork primary schools girls football  team that played in Limerick during the Munster championships clash on Sunday 15th June. Congratulations also to Daniel O’Donovan, Kilmacabea who was part of the Cork junior football team that defeated Limerick.
The club would like to express sympathy to Anton Walsh, Dromillihy on the death of his grandfather, Jack Cotter in Mitchelstown.

          Weekly Notes 15 June 2008:

The U14 hurlers took on Gabriel Og in the first round of the championship in Skibbereen on Thursday 5th June. The early exchanges were even and there wasn’t a lot between the teams to half time. The Kilmacs settled in the second half and with Eamon O’Sullivan and Oisin O’Sullivan excelling at the back, Liam Cahalane and Niall Hayes strong around the middle and Martin Collins and Liam Thompson very sharp up front the Kilmacs were able to go on and win the game. Team   Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam O’Driscoll, Oisin O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane, Niall Hayes, Martin Collins, Denny Hayes, Liam Thompson, Richie O’Sullivan, Odrahan Connolly, Kevin O’Donovan, Emma O’Callaghan, Eoin Collins. The U 12 hurlers travelled to play Diarmaid O’Mathuna’s on Monday 9th May. Even though the Kilmacs had the first score the overall hurling of the opposition was a little sharper and playing into the blinding evening sun led to the concession of a number of easy goals. In the second half an all round improvement meant the Kilmacs pegged the score back and with plenty of possession should have closed the gap further with better shooting. The final score was Kilmac 4-8 D O Mathuna 6 –9 but the overall performance was very encouraging with a lot of positives to be taken from it.
Congratulations to
Maultrahane National School who had a very successful day at the recent Sciath na Scoil Finals. The boys team were victorious in their grade but unfortunately their victory came at the expense of neighbours Leap. The girls team also won their grade and this makes it six years in a row for them.

Weekly Notes 08 June 2008:

The past week was a busy week for the club with several teams in action. On Thursday 29/5/08 Ballincollig made the long trip to Leap to take on the U14 hurlers in the league. This was a good tight contest which was a good test for the team and having to work hard, they had the ability to get goals, were able to come out on top on the score 3-1 to 1- 5.  The non exam minor footballers played Kilmeen in Rossmore on Thursday also. Again this group showed a great commitment to working hard and continue to learn the game. With all members of the available small squad contributing the Kilmacs were able to record a comfortable win on the score 2-20 to 1-7. The u10 footballers made the trip to Adrigole on Saturday morning 31/5/08. Getting going smartly and having a bit more strength and football experience than the opposition it was a chance for all to figure. With a beautiful day to admire the scenery and the hospitality of the locals it proved to be a very enjoyable trip for all despite the distance. Ballincollig were again the visitors to Leap on Monday 2nd June in the U12 hurling league. This game proved to be a mismatch as the Kilmacs limited resources proved to be much too strong for a very young opposition. Being the first game it did  allow the opportunity for mistakes to be made and highlight areas where work is needed. It was tough on a young Ballincollig team  to travel such a distance but they kept going which was a credit to themselves. Team Kevin Whooley, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Odrahan Connolly, Tiernan Kerrisk, Martin Collins, Euan Tobin, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Ciaran French, Matthew O’Neill, Shane Garvey, DJ Glanton, Iona Tobin. The junior 1 footballers played Muintir Bhaire but were well beaten The junior 2 footballers also played St Colums in the league and were beaten on the score 0-9 to 0-6.

        Weekly Notes 01 June 2008:

Sunday 25th May was an important day for Kilmacabea football club with the first outing of the newest members of the club when the U 10 footballers played their first game of the season when Urhan made the long trip to Leap. The children made their debut in perfect conditions and with an appreciative audience in what was a most enjoyable occasion. Unfortunately the result couldn’t be scripted as they were up against a skilful and well tuned side. As the game went on they did get to grips with the task and it should be seen as part of the learning and development of their game. Players John Patrick Sheehan, Shannon Ronan, Sean French, Andrew O’Donovan, Jamie O’Donoghue, Darren Whooley, Aishling O’Callaghan, Tiernan Kerrisk, Mark Wilson, Ciarán French, Damian Gore, Myles Tobin, Ellis Wilson, Karl Ronan, Odrahan Kerrisk , Dylan Morgan, Ian Jennings, Aidan Gore, Jamie Stott, Ashley Deane, Julie Ann Williamson.
The same two teams were in opposition in a u12 league game that followed. The Kilmacs got into their stride early and were soon well in control and playing with some good combination football. Some of the younger players were able to put their earlier disappointment behind them as the Kilmacs went on to record a comfortable victory. Team Matthew O’Neill, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Aishling Cahalane, Odrahan Connolly, Sean French, Euan Tobin, Martin Collins, Daniel O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Eoin O’Sullivan, Kevin Whooley, Damian Gore, Shane Garvey, Ciarán French, Tiernan Kerrisk, Mark Wilson.

          Weekly Notes 24 May 2008:

The U 16 hurlers played their first game of the season when Bantry were the welcome visitors on Friday 16th May. It looked as if physically Bantry had a huge advantage but this was not reflected in the game. Kilmacs key players Joseph Collins, John O’Sullivan, Thomas Jennings, Padraig Burke did exert their influence but it was the impact of the younger players such as Oisin O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Owen Collins, Liam Cahalane that ultimately was the difference between the teams. The Kilmacs won on the score 5-7 to 2-9. Other team members Eamon O’Sullivan, Padraig McCarthy, Richie O’Sullivan, Sean O’Regan, Liam Thompson, David O’Donovan. Several of these players were also in action the night before when Timoleague were the visitors for a U14 hurling game.   Timoleague had the better of the early exchanges but as the Kilmacs settled they were back in the game with 2 goals midway through the first half and were only a point behind at half time on the score 2-2 to 1-6. With every player working hard there was little in it until Liam Thompson pounced for two goals with 10 minutes remaining and this  gave the team the cushion to win on the score of 5-5 to 3-6.  The minor non exam team played Carrigaline 2 in Leap on Tuesday 20th May. The team performed well with some of the lesser lights stepping up to make up the numbers and play their part. After a good competitive game the team were victorious on the score 4 - 15 to 2 - 8. Team Eoin O’Neill, Stephen Calnan, Joseph O’Callaghan, John O’Sullivan(0-1), Colman O’Riordan, Thomas Jennings, Joseph Collins, Padraig McCarthy, Timothy Nyhan, (0-3), Padraig Burke(1-3), Colin McCarthy(0-4), Andrew O’Callaghan(3-4)
Kilmacabea GAA club would like to express sympathy to Kevin Whooley and family, Shreelane on the death of his grandfather Gerard Daly in Gort, Co.
Galway last week.

          Weekly Notes 17 May 2008:

The past week was a very busy one for the club. Sunday morning saw our second junior team in Aughaville against Tadhg Mac Catharigs in the league. A second half goal for the home side put them in the driving seat and they went to win by 1-8 to 0-6. On Tuesday evening our Non Exam Minor Footballers were at home to Kinsale. A very good first half for the visitors saw them building up a commanding lead. Kilmacs came back well after the resumption but the stronger Kinsale outfit ran winners 4-10 to 2-8. The minor footballers played Mizen in the league on Wednesday 7th May and had a comprehensive win.
On Tuesday evening also the junior team travelled to Bandon to take on last years champions in division one of the football league. With a number of the regulars exam tied, some of the second string who had been in action in Aughaville Sunday morning were pressed into service and acquitted themselves very well. An excellent overall performance was rewarded with a two point win. Kilmacabea 0-14, Bandon 0-12. even though Bandon were missing a number of regulars it was still a very encouraging result for Kilmacs and gives the selectors some options for the campaign ahead.
A big and enthusiastic crowd witnessed a superb game as the U12 footballers took on Kilmeen in the
West Cork final in Rosscarbery on Tuesday 13th May. Having been well beaten when the sides met in the league the Kilmacs belied that result with this performance. This game was excitement at its best and the game was played with high skill and intensity all through. An indication of this was the first 10 minutes were scoreless. From here though it was nip and tuck and if anything the Kilmacs who were playing with the hill looked to have the edge. The sides were level after 25 minutes but the concession of a goal after a defensive mix up just before half time looked to have handed the initiative to Kilmeen with the score 1-6 to 1-3. Martin Collins had also saved a penalty.  The second half continued as per the first but the Kilmacs were giving it everything and by the 13th minute were actually ahead by 1 point. There was no score from here to the 29th minute with both sides trying everything. When Kilmeen equalised on the 29th minute the momentum had swung their way and there overall strength showed when they goaled soon afterwards. This was a crushing blow and even though the Kilmacs kept trying unfortunately the effort had took its toll and Kilmeen were able to add 2 more points to win on the score of 2-12 to 2-7, the gap being rather harsh for the overall performance. All the players can feel proud of their effort. Matthew O’Neill again had a tremendous game in goal, being safe and assured and making a number of saves. Shane O’Neill had a huge game at full back and got great support from Sean French and Gavin Daly in the corner. The half back line of Odrahan Connolly, Aishling Cahalane and Darren Whooley had a great hour and were involved all through. Martin Collins(0-1) and Euan Tobin(0-1) with help from Bernadette O’Driscoll got through a huge amount of work around the middle right to the end. Diarmaid O’Callaghan(1-4) and captain Kevin Whooley(1-1) worked hard and were dangerous in the central attacking positions and they got good support from Eoin O’Sullivan and Aidan Williamson. Other team members Jonathon O’Regan, Shane Garvey, Daniel O’Sullivan, Isaac O’Shea, Shane Collins, Ciaran French, Damian Gore, Tiernan Kerrisk, Iona Tobin, Mark Wilson. The club wish Kilmeen well in their county campaign.

          Weekly Notes 10 May 2008:

Our Second Junior team journeyed to Goleen on Saturday evening last to take on the home team in a Section 2 Football League game. The panel was a blend of youth and experience and a few in between. Playing in a steady drizzle they were doing well in general play but not on the scoreboard. By the seventeenth minute Goleen were two points clear when their replacement goalkeeper failed to deal with high dropping ball from Timothy Nyhan which ended in the net. They continued to tack on the points, two more from play and two frees, leaving the half time score Goleen 0-6, Kilmacabea 1-0. In the second half Kilmacs came more into the game two points from Noel McCarthy (one from a free)  were cancelled out by similar scores for the home side, who added another at the half way stage before second half substitute Brian O Donovan struck for a well taken goal for the visitors, leaving just a point in it. Goleen had stretched the lead again to three before Brian pulled one back. With time running out the western men had restored the three point advantage, when a good Kilmacs move saw timothy Nyhan at the edge of the square opting to punch over the bar, not realising he had the outcome of the game at his mercy. Had he successfully gone for the more difficult option he would have drawn the game with a goal. Team… Anton Walsh, Liam Wolfe, Donal O Donoghue, Andrew O Callaghan, Jonathan Hill, Kevin O Driscoll, Denis O Donovan, Micheal Donovan, Kevin O Sullivan, Denis O Driscoll, Noel McCarthy(0-2, 0-1 free), Mark Jennings, Noel Crowley, Timothy Nyhan(1-1), Aiden Glavin, Subs… Daniel Wolfe and Brian O Donovan (1-1).
Given the fact that it was this particular combination’s first game together all concerned were pleased enough with their efforts. As light faded they made their way to the Fastnet Bar where they were made most welcome by Martin Whooley. The same Martin starred at centre field for his native Kilmacabea in triumphs at various levels in the late seventies and early eighties, before he set out to make his fortune. He returned some years ago to settle in his wife’s native Goleen.
Congratulations to Michael Crowley, Leap on winning £1500 in the
County Club draw recently.
The minor hurlers kept their unbeaten run when they defeated St. James by one point on Monday 28th April. The U 14 footballers continued their good form when they took on Kilmeen in Leap on Friday 2nd May. The team started well and early exchanges were even but the Kilmacs were linking well and working for each other and went in ahead at half time on the score 1-8 to 1-5. Being stronger in the central positions and with good movement and possession the team always had the edge. Kilmeen were always in the game but when they did breach the defence they found Denny Hayes in goal equal for everything thrown his way and his clearances set up many an attack. A feature of the performance was the accurate passing and excellent movement of players throughout the pitch. Team Denny Hayes, Eamon O’Sullivan, Kieran O’Sullivan, Martin Collins, Liam O’Driscoll, Emma O’Callaghan, Declan O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane, Declan O’Sullivan, Richie O’Sullivan, Niall Hayes, Oisin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Liam Thompson, Fiona O’Sullivan, Kevin O’Donovan, Matthew O’Neill. Emma O’Callaghan, Fiona O’Sullivan and Aishling Cahalane who had been important members of this group will no longer be able to continue playing due to the recent rule passed at congress whereby girls will be no longer be able to play with the boys above the U12 grade. This will impact on smaller rural clubs especially.
The U12 footballers took on Pedlars in the West Cork semi final on Monday 5th May in Ross.
Having previously lost to the same opposition in the league it was with a great sense of determination the team took the field. This was an exciting game of football played with skill in ideal conditions. There was little between the sides in the first half and the break came with the score Kilmacabea 1-4 Pedlars 1-2. Kilmacabea got the break they needed early in the second half when they goaled. Pedlars had a lot of possession at this stage of the game and even though they goaled shortly afterwards the Kilmacs defence was outstanding and the forwards kept their noses in front. After weathering the storm another goal after 20 minutes was to put daylight between the teams and from here to the end they rubber stamped their win on the score 5-10 to 2-7. On a night when there were many stars in a fine team performance one man Matthew O’Neill deserves a special mention for a super display in goal. Team Matthew O’Neill, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Aishling O’Callaghan, Odhran Connolly, Sean French, Euan Tobin, Martin Collins, Eoin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan, Daniel O’Sullivan, Kevin Whooley, Aidan Williamson, Damien Gore, Isaac O’Shea, Shane Collins, Tiernan Kerrisk, Iona Tobin, Ciaran French, Mark Wilson.

          Weekly Notes 27 April 2008:

The U 14 footballers played Ilen Og in Rath on Thursday 17/4/08. The team played well as a unit against a weak challenge and won comfortably. Liam Thompson, Eamon O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane, Niall Hayes played well with Emma O’Callaghan who was captain leading by example with a goal.
The U 16 footballers also played Ilen Og in Rath on Saturday 19/4/08. Again this group has settled as a unit and working for each other produced a solid display to win on the score 4-9 to 1-10. This was a welcome boost for this group with Thomas Jennings, Joseph Collins, John O’Sullivan, Sean O’Regan working hard around the middle and Tommy Hayes scoring a cracking goal.
The U 12 footballers played Dunmanus on Monday 21st in Leap. Before they knew where they were they were 9 points down but did not let this deter them and rising themselves, this was a good competitive game and both sides were happy with a draw at Kilmacabea 5 -7 Dunmanus 3-13.
The minor footballers started their season with a good win over St. Columns who were visitors to Leap on
Wednesday 16/4/08.
The minor hurlers of St. Fachtnas had a convincing win against Bantry on
Monday 21/4/08
Ruairi Hourihane and Daniel O’Donovan were part of the Carbery Senior football team that defeated UCC Monday 21/4/08 in the county championship.

          Weekly Notes 20 April 2008:

Could the replay possibly match the drawn game, for entertainment, excitement and quality of football, was the question being asked last week about the Under 21 B Football Final. Well it did and it was even better. The clerk of the weather played a part by providing an almost perfect evening for football, in the fine Rosscarbery venue. Both teams gave it their all again in the same positive sporting manner. While a few yellow cards were issued, they were very much of a technical nature. St James’s were thoroughly disappointed no doubt by the narrow defeat but they can take a lot of positives from their campaign and this fine bunch of players must have a bright future. Kilmacabea Club wishes them well. Both clubs have a lot in common at many levels.
For Kilmacs this was a very heart warming victory. Almost half of last year’s team had moved on. The new players joining the panel had never won anything under age, until they captured the 2007 Non Exam Minor League Title. Most of the panel had a taste of success last year for the first time and it whetted their appetites for more. They honed the traditional skills of the game and played for each other as a team. Daniel O Donovan, clearly much improved after his recent injury, had us two points up by the fourth minute. However the Ardfield men got a bit of a grip around the centre and were three points clear by the 20th minute. Were we going to be overrun this time? The selectors made a few positional switches up front involving Daniel, John O Driscoll and Coleman O Riordan which steadied the ship and four more points to two from James’s narrowed the gap to one at the break.
The second half lived up to everything these two teams had produced so far. The quality of the exchanges and the closeness of the scores had everybody on tenterhooks. Only twice was there more than the minimum between the sides. To the delight of Kilmacs and the dismay of Ardfield, one of those was at the final whistle, when the score was 0-12 to 0-10. Ruairi Hourihane did Trojan work around the centre of the field. His partner Kevin O Sullivan should be very happy also with his contribution. Clive Sweetnam’s work rate at centre back was very significant and he went forward for two great points from play which proved to be the difference in the end. Sam O Driscoll was solid as ever at full back. What he lacks in stature he makes up for in skill, courage and ability to read situations. Mark Jennings and Stephen Calnan completed a very effective last line of defence and gave great cover to Colin McCarthy in goal; he wasn’t tested as severely this time as he had been in the earlier games. His reading of the game and great kick outs were very important in a game where every ball counted. On the wing Thomas French was his usual lively self, ever ready to drive forward and link up with the attack and Jonathan Hill policed his opposite number very effectively for the hour. John O Driscoll at centre forward won some great ball especially in the second half. Richard
Jennings, Timothy Nyhan, Coleman O Riordan and Andrew O Callaghan hero of the drawn game all worked very hard in attack. Daniel O Donovan, who was held scoreless in the drawn game, notched 10 points (6 from frees) matching the opposition’s total. What more needs be said. Connor O Callaghan came on as sub late in the game. Tom Collins, Patrick O Driscoll and Joseph O Callaghan all played their part during the campaign. The shrewd management of Mick O Donovan and his co- selectors Dan Hourihane and John Keohane meant it was in fact a twenty two man effort. All of them can take immense pride in this success.
Kieran O Sullivan was present for the presentation of the magnificent trophy commemorating his late parents as was Teresa Cadogan representing the sponsors Clona Milk. Captain Ruairi’s acceptance speech was the most emotional this writer has heard in over twenty years involved with the club. The graciousness of the St. James’s camp in defeat was exemplary and when Ruairi called for three cheers for them, he got a very genuine response. See below for some images of the lads celebrating.

The U 14 footballers played Urhan in Leap on
Saturday 12/4/08. Playing with good commitment in all positions and producing good combination play they fashioned a deserved victory. Within the overall effort Liam Thompson, Eamon O’Sullivan, Liam Cahalane, Niall Hayes and David O’Donovan had fine individual displays.
The U 12 footballers put in a good effort against Pedlars on Monday 14th at Ballinascarthy. In the first half they were out of sorts and were well behind at half time but in the second half they put in a tremendous effort and were unlucky not to get a result.

          Weekly Notes 13 April 2008:

The Under 21 Footballers continued to punch above their weight when they met fancied St. James’s in the B Final in windy Rosscarbery last Sunday morning. Kilmacs played with the very strong wind in the first half. Daniel O Donovan, who had a cast removed from his foot forty eight hours earlier, started in the full forward line. The chilling wind was helping the defence but was proving to be a mixed blessing for the forwards, as time after time the ball was swept out over the end line. The Ardfield men were the first to score, a pointed free in the seventh minute. Andrew O Callaghan replied with one from play. John O Driscoll pointed a free on the quarter hour. It was clear that scores were going to be very hard to come by, despite the whole hearted endeavour of both sides. James’s equalised from play and Timothy Nyhan floated over two good points from play before half time.
A two point lead looked very shaky in the conditions. This was quickly reduced to one by the challengers on the resumption. The pattern was very similar to the first period with forwards finding it very difficult to find the target. Eventually a pointed free brought the Ardfield side level and when a similar score put them in the lead their followers were in full voice. Timothy Nyhan tempered their celebrations when he restored parity from play. Were we in for a draw? Then St. James’s struck for the goal which seemed to have settled the issue. Unfortunately for them this Kilmac outfit do not know when they are beaten. With time running out they pulled out all the stops and Andrew O Callaghan landed the ball in the corner of the Ardfield net on the stroke of full time, to send the game to a replay.

The U 12 footballers played their first game in the league when St. Colums were the visitors on Tuesday 1st April. St Colums were quicker off the mark and were in front early on. Gradually the Kilmacs settled and got on top and eventually went on to win comfortably. On Monday 8th April Kilmeen were the visitors to Leap. Kilmeen were a strong skilful balanced side and while the Kilmacs showed some flashes of their ability they suffered the dissappointment of a comprehensive defeat but to their credit kept trying hard all through. Team Aidan Williamson, Shane O’Neill, Darren Whooley, Tiernan Kerrisk, Odrahan Connolly, Aishling Cahalane, Martin Collins, Euan Tobin, Eoin O’Sullivan, Diarmaid O’Callaghan,  Kevin Whooley, Johnaton O’Regan, Isaac O’Shea, Mark Wilson, Sean French, Matthew O’Neill, Shane Collins, Damian Gore, Ciaran French, Bernadette O’Driscoll, Daniel O’Sullivan, Patrick O’Donovan. The U14 footballers played Ballinora in the feile competition on Wednesday 3rd April in Leap. Being short some players it took a while to find their feet. They put in a good effort to be level with a quarter to go but the overall strength of the opposition proved too much in the end. Kilmacabea have joined forces with Carbery Rangers to field a minor hurling team in 2008 to be known as St. Fachtnas. The team played its first game on Monday 7th April when they defeated Barryroe on the score of 2-9 to 0-8.Conor O’Callaghan, Joseph Collins, Padraig Burke and Joseph Collins took part.
The club would like to express sympathy to the O’Sullivan Family, especially Kevin and Declan on the death of their grandfather last week.

          Weekly Notes 06 April 2008:

The deferred Football League match against Barryroe was played in Leap, in showery conditions on Sunday last. Kilmacs were forced to play second fiddle to the visitors for most of the game. Fielding without a number of experienced regulars and playing only the ever reliable Clive Sweetnam from the U 21 panel, the team had an experimental look about it. Barryroe had scored 1-4, all from play, before Ger O Donovan had the first point for the home side. Barryroe sent over another before Ger had another well worked point quickly followed by one from Noel O Donoghue. Barryroe had two more points from frees before half time.
The visitors sent another one over on the restart but the home side settled down to try to make a game of it. Ger had three points from frees and Eoin O Donovan raced through from mid field to add one from play. Barryroe pointed again from play and Kilmacs other midfielder Ciaran O Donovan hit a long range point before Barryroe struck for a well taken goal to put the outcome beyond doubt. One more pointed free from Ger was answered by one from play for the men in blue. The final score of 2-10 to 0-9 was just reward for Barryroe’s better overall balance enhanced by a particularly impressive display from Denis Harrington at left corner forward.

The U-16 footballers took on Newcestown in Leap in a league game on Saturday 29th March. The team took time to find a  pattern and playing against a stronger side were made to pay early on. When they did come into the game they had a lot of possession, especially in the second half but missed a lot of opportunities. The final score was Kilmacabea 2-3 Newcestown 2-10. Team Liam Cahalane, Eoin O’Neill(0-1), Eamon O’Sullivan, Padraig McCarthy, Joseph Collins, Padraig French, John O’Sullivan, Sean O’Regan, Liam Thompson, Padraig Burke(2 –0), Richie O’Sullivan, Tommy Hayes, Niall Hayes, Declan O’Sullivan, Finnán Tobin, David O’Donovan.
The main event of this weekend is the West Cork U21 Football Final vs. Ardfield in Rosscarbery at
11.30am on Sunday 6th April(Check time locally). This team has exceeded all expectations in their achievements so far and have earned all the support they should be given. While the final has probably come too early for the recovery from injury of Daniel O’Donovan, the TEAM can go into the final in the belief in their individual capabilities and in each other. Go along and support.

          Weekly Notes 30 March 2008:

Kilmacabea under 21 performance in the Second Round against Bal.a few weeks ago, proved to be no flash in the pan. They repeated it again against the physically stronger Kilbrittain side in the semi final played in Ballineen on Easter Monday afternoon. This time it was without the influential Daniel O Donovan who is nursing a foot injury from the earlier game. Kilbrittain playing with the strong wind were first to score with a well taken point from play. Centre back Clive Sweetnam replied followed by another from centre forward John O Driscoll. An eight minute free brought Kilbrittain level. Ruairi Hourihane restored Kilmacs lead, a very satisfactory position playing against the strong slightly diagonal wind. In the fifteenth minute a turnover of possession on the forty saw Kilbrittain racing through for a well taken goal, to open a real gap between the sides for the first time. Preventing the challengers from building on this initiative was now crucial for the reigning champions Kilmacabea and not a man of the fifteen was found wanting. A well taken free by John O and another good point from mid fielder Ruairi was answered by like scores from Kilbrittain. Some good work by goalkeeper Colin McCarthy and tenacious defending, without conceding too many frees ensured that only the goal separated  the sides at the break.
With the wind at their backs it was now all to play for. John O Driscoll slotted over a point almost from the restart. Kilbrittain were now finding it hard to cope with his combination of strength, speed and skill and conceded two frees, which the same John O duly converted to draw level. Ruairi raced through to send over his third score from play to restore the lead, to the delight of the Western followers. Andrew O Callaghan who was doing well on the wing, sent over a good point, before Kilbrittain had their first score of the half, a point from play to leave the minimum between the sides, with twelve minutes gone. Ruairi, who was getting tremendous support from his midfield partner Kevin O Sullivan, raced through for another point from play. However Kilbrittain were by no means out of the game. They broke up the field time after time, but great work by Clive in the centre and Sam O Driscoll at full back, ably supported by Mark Jennings on the wing and corner backs Jonathan Hill and Stephen Calnan. Meanwhile penetrating runs of the fearless Tom French were causing all sorts of problems in the Black and Amber rearguard time and again. John O Driscoll was having the game of his life and second half substitute Colman O Riordan was making a good contribution. Timothy Nyhan was playing a very intelligent game at full forward, wouldn’t his late grandfather (and namesake) be proud of him? Frees were being conceded, four of which John O drove over to stretch the lead to six points, with time running out. Kilbrittain teams don’t ever surrender but the goal they needed to get back  in game didn’t come and they had to settle for two late points, one from play and a free, leaving the final score 0-15 to 1-8. A sixteen man performance out of the top drawer, put Kilmacs into the under 21B final for the third year in a row. Man of the match, for this writer, John O Driscoll.

Team: Colin McCarthy, Stephen Calnan, Sam O’Driscoll, Jonathan Hill, Mark Jennings, Clive Sweetnam (0-1), Tom French, Kevin O’Sullivan, Ruairi Hourihane (0-4), Richard Jennings, John O’Driscoll (0-9,0-7 frees), Andrew O’Callaghan (0-1), Conor O’Callaghan, Timothy Nyhan, Tom Collins. Subs: Colman O’Riordan, Patrick O’Driscoll and Joseph O’Callaghan.
